Onyx Motorbikes is bringing back the popular moped style of the 70s and 80s, but updating it with electric motors. Originally, mopeds were more bicycles with engines on them. They could be powered by either pedaling or with the attached motors. They weren’t very strictly monitored because they couldn’t travel much faster than what a bicycle can achieve. If you were to strictly adhere to that definition, you might wonder how what Onyx is offering could be considered a moped. The bike can be powered either by pedal or motor. It’s the speed that will have you scratching your head about the title of “moped.” The RCR Café Blaster has 72 volts of instant torque that can achieve a top speed of 60 miles per hour with a range of up to 75 miles. You’re not going to hit that speed pedaling! Even the CTY version pushes the boundaries of speed with 48 volts of torque for a top speed of over 30 miles per hour and a range of 40 miles.
The motor Onyx is using closely mimics the feel of a kitted two-stroke motor through the entire RPM range. You can get up to speed in just four seconds. Additional batteries are available to extend your range. And if the RCR or CTY isn’t your style, you can change things up with the DRT upgrade kit and go for more of that scrambler look.
