It is well-known that former California governor and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger loves rugged, large SUVs. In fact, he often drove around in Los Angeles in his original diesel Mercedes G-Class SUV. Recently, he has been a strong supporter of clean energy and clean cars, as well. As such, he apparently gave up his beloved diesel-guzzling SUV for something much cleaner. Now, the former governor has teamed up with Austrian company Kreisel Electric to create an all-electric version of his favorite SUV, the Mercedes G-Class.
The days of electric cars being driven mainly by bookish environmental nerds is over. The new G-Class is a beast of an electric vehicle. It is an amazing vehicle with good off-road capability—it is a vehicle that you could definitely picture The Terminator driving.
The diesel engine in this 482-horsepower custom vehicle was removed and replaced with a 80 kWh electric battery. The Electric G-Class SUV has a maximum speed of 133 MPH. It can go from 0-60 in just 5.6 seconds. The battery recharges quickly, in just 25 minutes it can reach 80 percent of its capacity. This powerful SUV even has a 190-mile driving range, according to Kreisel. This is pretty impressive for a vehicle that weighs over 5,000 lbs.
The Electric G-Class is a prototype custom-designed for Schwarzenegger. He plans to take the SUV back to California and test it. He will provide feedback to Kreisel based on his experience driving this cool vehicle on the streets of LA. Kreisel is reportedly in talks with partner companies to mass-produce its batteries for cars. It is likely that feedback obtained about the Electric G-Class will help Kreisel with this goal.
