Call us crazy, but we think the Apple AirPods might very well be the brand’s most singular triumph of the last few years. Not only have they helped popularise wireless earbuds in general, but they’re wildly optimal and convenient in their own right. It’s then terrific news that Apple has finally announced a follow-up, which will be available as early as next week. What’s even better is that the new AirPods will represent a marked improvement over their impressive predecessors.
Thanks to a new and powerful H1 chip, the next generation of AirPods will deliver faster connection times, 50% more talk time, hands-free access to “Hey Siri,” and premium sonics. The buds will come with either a standard charging case or a brand new wireless charging case, the latter of which provides a boost at home or on the go.
In tandem with the announcement, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, Phil Schiller, said the following: “The world’s best wireless headphones just got even better with the new AirPods. They are powered by the new Apple-designed H1 chip which brings an extra hour of talk time, faster connections, hands-free ‘Hey Siri’ and the convenience of a new wireless battery case.”
Starting next week, AirPods with the standard charging case will be available for A$249, and AirPods with the wireless charging case will be available for A$319. You can also buy the wireless charging case separately for A$129. And should you want to add a personal engraving to your AirPods, Apple has you covered, free of charge.
