Is Apple’s New iPad Pro is Your Next Laptop?

Apple has just released the latest iteration of the iPad Pro and whilst it’s almost unrecognisable, it’ll now be able to use Face ID to recognise you. Last night in New York, Tim Cook hosted the trillion-dollar tech titan’s fourth keynote this year and amongst a slew of announcements the iPad Pro was a standout. Positioned as a laptop replacement, the new device is designed to do everything your usual PC would do, but in a much more stylish package.

Alongside Face ID, the new iPad Pro boasts a Liquid Retina Display and a completely revamped screen design, giving iPad Pro’s entire facade a long-awaited facelift. Coming in either an 11 inch (27.5cm) or 12.9 inch (32.25cm) model, Apple says it’s the most advanced display ever. It’s also the thinnest iPad to date at just 5.9mm. This svelte design was no mean feat and involved thinner speakers and a complete redesign of the 12-megapixel rear camera.

Never ones to compromise, Apple went right ahead and gave their new flagship tablet the most advanced chip they’ve ever made. Under the hood is the A12X Bionic chip with a neural engine. Now, we don’t know what any of that means either, but it’s said to make the new iPad Pro faster than 92% of PC laptops and powerful enough to run programs like Adobe Photoshop.

And all that weighs in at under 500 grams.

It wouldn’t be a new iPad if Apple didn’t throw in a couple of choice accessories that your new device just can’t do without. The Apple Pencil has been remodelled to include wireless charging and an adaptive touch system and of course, the smart keyboard is available to give you a more holistic laptop experience. In other changes, the iPad Pro has dropped the headphone jack and the lightning adapter swapping the latter out in lieu of the soon-to-be-ubiquitous USB-C.

As you’d expect all these improvements come at a premium price. The base model iPad Pro will set you back AUD$1,229 but, you’d be lucky to walk away from an Apple Store spending anything less than AUD$2,000. A full price list is below.
