Headlamps have come a long way. They used to be a candle strapped to your head with a reflective disc behind them. Not too long ago, headlamps were large and bulky, and “comfortable” was never a word used to describe them. BioLite has just released a headlamp that provides plenty of light and is actually comfortable. The ultra-lightweight USB rechargeable Headlamp 200 is the brightest, most comfortable and most reasonably priced headlamp on the market.
The challenge that headlamps face is power. To create a high-power lumen output, they need bigger batteries, which makes the unit larger and less comfortable. If you go for a smaller battery pack, then you sacrifice brightness. BioLite opted to go for the smaller battery pack, but they didn’t sacrifice the lumens. The Headlamp 200 still offers 200 lumens of light and it provides 3 hours of light on high and 40 hours on low. You can also choose from different settings, including a white light with dimming, a red light with dimming, a white strobe and a red strobe. You can also choose between a beam and a floodlight mode, or mix the two. You can also purchase the BioLite Stuffsack, which turns the headlamp into a lantern just by putting it into the sack and hanging it up high.
As for comfort, BioLite’s headlamp uses “3D SlimFit Technology,” which integrates the headlamp’s electronics into the fabric band. Since the light is part of the band, there’s no bouncing or slipping while wearing the headlamp. The whole unit only weighs 50g, so it’s very lightweight, which of course adds to its comfort. If you’re trail running in the dark, the band is also moisture-wicking so it will help to keep the sweat out of your eyes.
All that comfort and performance might lead you to think that you’ll be paying a lot for the headlamp. BioLite, however, doesn’t think you should have to pay a lot, and they’ve set pricing at only $44.95 for the BioLite Headlamp 200.
