Insta360’s new One R is a modular action camera that does the work of two cameras—an action camera that you can mount on the top of a helmet or on a selfie stick, and a 360 camera that takes it all in. The modular camera switches back and forth with ease. With just a press of a tab and a couple of pulls, the One R breaks down into three pieces—the battery, the base or “core” with all the control elements, including the touchscreen and shutter buttons, and the lens.
With plenty of experience in the 360 camera market, Insta360 employs the same expertise that they put into the One X to make the One R a well-balanced camera capable of capturing smooth 360 footage. That footage is captured at either 5.7k resolution at 30fps or 4k at 50fps. Of course, action cameras are a bird of a different feather. Still, for a first time offering in the market, the One X does a pretty impressive job. The action camera lens, or “mod,” is a 4K wide-angle f/2.0 16mm lens (35mm equivalent).
Whether in the 360 mode or the action camera mode, the One X is waterproof. It can shoot underwater up to 5 meters and can stay under for up to 30 minutes at a time. Insta360 used their own software to power the camera, and that software offers electronic stabilization. It also automatically detects and deletes selfie sticks from the picture or video. For video, you can also capture audio with the built-in mic on the camera or connect to a Bluetooth audio recording system. It can also be paired with Apple’s AirPods. Charging for the camera is done via a USB-C and provides 65 minutes of continuous shooting on a full battery.
Don’t let the price tag scare you, though. Sure, the Insta360 One R Modular Action Camera is priced at $479, but remember, you’re actually getting two cameras for that price, and that’s a pretty good deal.
