Heads up, GoPro–Sony is getting in on the action camera game. The Japanese brand recently announced their new RX0 action camera, which aims to pack big quality into a preciously small package. More specifically, the camera integrates a 1 inch CMOS image sensor, BIONZ X image processor and wide angle 24 mm f/2.4 Zeiss lens to deliver 15.3 megapixel photos and 4K video. A somewhat hefty price tag of US$700 (A$ $1,049) gives GoPro plenty of room to breathe easy, but on the other hand it’s clear that Sony’s not fooling around.
Weighing in at a mere 110g, Sony’s RX0 brilliantly pairs sophisticated tech with sturdy bite-size construction, and distinguishes itself by touting prime resolution, control and versatility. Among the camera’s features is slo-mo footage capability, anti-distortion shutter and rapid fire shooting at 16 fps. You can sync the RX0 with other cameras and accessories for multiple angles or sync it with your mobile device for multi-function control. Included on the back is a 1.5 inch LCD display.
Given the situations these types of cameras get in to, the RX0 is naturally built to endure. To guarantee resilience, Sony employed rigid duralumin for the compact chassis. Accordingly, the RX0 is waterproof up to 10m, shockproof up to 2m, and can withstand up to 200kg of pressure.
For storage, the RX0 uses a microSD card. From the battery, expect 60 minutes of continuous video on a single charge. It should also be noted that the camera doesn’t include a zoom option, but that’s certainly no deal-breaker. After all, if you’re flying through the air on a snowboard, you won’t have time to zoom in anyway.
