Instagram Introduces New Searchable Map Feature with Selfies

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced Instagram is launching a searchable map to provide users with a more interactive experience on the platform. While the app previously had a map that displayed feed posts, the upgraded feature will include the ability to explore popular tagged locations and filter results by specific categories, including cafes, restaurants and beauty salons.

“We’re introducing a new searchable map on IG today,” Zuckerberg said on his Instagram story. “You can now discover popular local businesses near you and filter by category.”

Browsing the searchable map, users can view nearby locations, businesses and other venues via tagged posts, stories and guides from the wider Instagram community. Perfect for planning a cheeky trip away, users can also search a hashtag of a city or neighbourhood to see what’s available in the area. For example, #Sydney would allow users to browse recent stories, top posts and relevant guides of tagged locations to learn more. Upon finding something they like, there’s the option to save it in a collection or DM it to a friend.

If an account is set to public and they use a location tag or sticker in a post, the content will be automatically added to the map for others to see. Something worth noting, Snapchat currently offers a similar feature that allows users to post public stories attached to a specific location.
