Quarantining for the COVID-19 pandemic has caused a sharp rise in online meetings and other work-from-home solutions. That rise has also pointed out just how noisy the world is, as meeting attendees have struggled to hear the speaker over a variety of background noise. Krisp has a solution for that—an app that filters out virtually all background noise.
The Krisp Mute App is powered by an AI that filters out background noise so that online meetings can happen without distraction (with the exception of the odd toddler running in to ask a question here and there). The app is available on PCs and Macs. Normally a paid service, Krisp is offering a free tier to its service during the pandemic. The free tier offers up to 120 minutes per week. For students, teachers, government employees and hospital workers, the Krisp Pro tier is free for the next six months.
Machine learning plays a big role in the app. As you speak, the app learns to recognize your voice and to distinguish between it and other sounds. The app lets the waves of your voice pass through while eliminating the sound waves of any other noise that the microphone picks up. It also works the other way, eliminating background noise coming into your computer from the presenter’s mic. Krisp is compatible with more than 600 conferencing, messaging, and streaming aps, including Zoom, FaceTime, Skype, Discord, Slack, QuickTime, Messenger, and Google Chat. In fact, the Discord site claims, “Have a vacuum running in the background; slam a door; ruffle a bag of chips; keep using your really loud keyboard your friends complain about. They won’t be able to hear it.”
With so many of us working from home and learning the limits of online meeting services, knowing that there’s an app out there that can help eliminate distracting noise is a real blessing.
