Nokia just made a big comeback with their new Nokia 8, announced last week in Sydney by HMD Global, the home of Nokia mobiles. It has all the major features you would want from a smartphone, as well as 3 industry firsts that might just be the tip of the iceberg for converting other brand-loyal consumers. Man of Many got an opportunity to try it out first hand before it releases onto the market, and we took this opportunity with open arms to see just how the Nokia 8 measures up.

Some of the key features, which we'll explain in more detail, include the dual-sight camera and video mode, the OZO spatial 360° audio, the body milled from a single block of 6000 series aluminium, the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 835 mobile platform that delivers excellent battery life and outstanding graphics, the pure Android experience, 4 GB of RAM and the ample storage space of 64 GB storage with Micro SD card support of up to 256 GB.

When it comes to smartphones, everyone has their own idea or their own 'must-haves' of what they want in a phone. For some it might be a good quality camera or software while for others it might be storage space or just simply good craftsmanship and design. Here are 8 reasons we think the new Nokia 8 is a combination of all these 'must-have' features and hence why we believe it will be a major contender in the smartphone market.

Dual-sight camera and video mode

The Nokia 8's dual-sight camera and video mode is a first for mobile phones. It allows you to simultaneously use both the front and rear camera in a split screen visual that you can then easily share on social channels or you can even livestream in this mode. Instead of a "selfie", they call this type of photo a "bothie" for obvious reasons. Call it what you want - it's a pretty cool feature. We're thinking festivals, road trips and picnics to name a few occasions where this feature will come in handy.

Precision craftsmanship and superior design

The seamless unibody construction is ultra slim and ultra sleek. It's just 4.6mm thin at the edge and 7.3mm slim on average meaning it's easily carried in the palm of your hand. The full aluminium body is milled from a single block of 6000 series aluminium and refined through a 40 stage process of machining, anodizing and then polished into a beautiful mirror finish. There will be 4 trendy colours available including polished blue, tempered blue, steel and polished copper.

Nokia's OZO™ spatial 360° audio is Hollywood quality in the palm of your hand

So what exactly does this mean? The OZO spatial 360° audio brings a fully immersive audio experience to your 4K 30 fps video allowing you to relive your memories as if you were still there. 3 Microphones with Nokia acoustic technology algorithms enable you to capture sound with extraordinary detail. It's truly a whole new level of sound that's exclusive to Nokia 8 and the first time it's ever been implemented into a smartphone.

The latest Google Android that's guaranteed to always be pure, secure and up to date

Simplistic and minimalistic Google services that's uncluttered and designed to give you just what you need. No extra and unnecessary bits and bobbles. Nokia will also ensure you get monthly software updates and the latest in Android offerings so you stay secure and up to date.

Innovative software to deliver a high performing system with longer battery life

Given Nokia's reputation on stellar battery life (aka the original legendary 3310), one of the first questions that popped into our minds when receiving the Nokia 8 was "how long will the battery last". So, we let it charge up to 100% and used it until it only had 1% left before charging it again, and the result was exactly what we hoped for. It lasted 2 full days with regular use including emails, texts, social checking and uploading of multiple Instagram stories etc. From the morning, through the day and night and it only reached 1% the next night. Through their cutting edge technology, the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 835 mobile platform delivers maximum performance for longer.

A Super slim 13 MP camera with ZEISS optics

Given the industry we're in, a Smartphone with a great camera is absolutely essential. The Nokia 8's 13 MP colour sensor combined with optical image stabilization as well as wide angle phase detection does a more than satisfactory job in getting perfect photos, every time. Both the front and rear camera are equipped with ZEISS optics, meaning your photo game will get that much stronger.

An LCD display with brilliant clarity

The 5.3” 2K (554 ppi) polarized display is believed to be the brightest IPS LCD display on the market. It is also protected by sculpted Corning® Gorilla® Glass 5 that will bring you an ultra-clear, ultra-vivid viewing experience.

Substantial storage capability

The Nokia 8 has storage space of 64 GB and it has an extra slot that allows Micro SD card support of up to 256 GB. That means you have the option to keep 320 GB worth of files in the palm of your hand.

The Nokia 8 was designed with content creators in mind. “We know that fans are creating and sharing live content more than ever before, with millions of photos and videos shared every minute on social media. People are inspired by the content they consume and are looking for new ways to create their own. It’s these people who have inspired us to craft a flagship smartphone which perfectly balances premium design, an outstanding experience and powerful performance” says Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer of HMD Global.

The Nokia 8 will be available for a RRP of $899.00 at JB Hi Fi and Harvey Norman and is currently available for pre-order at JB Hi Fi.
Check it out

Have you subscribed to Man of Many?
