SPOT first revolutionized the world of backcountry communication back in the late 2000s. Since then, there has been an explosion of other products and services, but SPOT is back on the scene with SPOT X, Orange.
SPOT X is at its core a two-way text messenger meant for traveling where communication is limited. The device weighs only 7 ounces and features a 2.7-inch dot matrix screen and a physical QWERTY keyboard. It also features a quick S.O.S. button that transmits a search and rescue message to rescue centers that allows back and forth communication so that you can share the details of your situation.
SPOT X also tracks your progress. You can select from 2.5, 5, 10, 30, or 60 minute tracking intervals, which friends and family can monitor to keep track of your progress using Google maps. Alternatively, you can use the check in feature to keep them up to date. SPOT X can exchange messages with any cell phone number or email address, and you can post to social media using SPOT X.
You will need a service plan to use SPOT X, but SPOT offers that as well. You can chose from the Basic, Advanced, or Unlimited packages. You can make a 12-month commitment on these plans or go month to month. Each of the plans include unlimited check-in and S.O.S messages. Custom messages and tracking interval frequency vary per plan.
With SPOT X, you’ll always have the answer for “where in the world?”
