First teased back in the pre-pandemic days of CES 2019, the 65-inch LG Signature R1 Rollable OLED TV has finally been unleashed on the Australian public. The innovative piece of technology has the neat ability to roll up, fitting snugly inside a stand when not in use. But all those new-age developments come at a price, a pretty hefty one. The new LG Rollable TV will set you back an eye-watering AUD$130,000, but that’s not the only catch.

Unlike practically all of LG’s other consumer products, the rollable OLED TV will not be available to purchase in-store or via a third-party retailer. Instead, each variation of the massive unit will be custom-made to order, meaning it’s unlikely you’ll have the opportunity to try before you buy. Risky? Maybe, but what price can you really put on the prestige that comes with being the first person in the country to own the world’s only rollable TV?
From a technical perspective, the LG R1 Rollable OLED TV is a bit of a modern marvel. The other-worldly design is matched only by it’s form-fitting functionality. When concealed, the screen on the new TV can be placed inside an aluminium base stand that also houses a 100W, 4.2-channel speaker, complete with industry-leading Dolby Atmos sound.

When unfurled, the R1 cops four HDMI 2.1 ports, while also supporting Dolby Vision iQ HDR and running the latest version of WebOS. However, there are some limitations. Presumably due to the rollable innovation, the new television does not have 8K capabilities or the additional brightness that the G1 OLED boasts. It’s a minor downside to what is an otherwise impressive release, particularly when you note the television’s multi-use purposes.
The display has the ability to roll out to three different heights – Full view, Line view and Zero view. Full view is designed for regular TV viewing, Line view offers a range of information widgets like the weather, time and news headlines as well as access to your music. Much like the Signature RX OLED released last year, the R1 can also be partially unrolled, allowing the user to access apps like the system’s clock, music player, photo gallery and dashboard interface.
The 65-inch LG Signature R1 Rollable OLED TV will be available for Australian customers to pre-order from July 2021 and is priced at AUD$130,000. According to LG, once a deposit is accepted, the development team will custom make the TV in six to eight weeks before shipping and setting it up in your home.
