Christian Bale is Going Bald to Play Frankenstein in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Untitled Film

Continuing his tradition of immersive transformations, Christian Bale is ready to undergo another startling physical change, shaving his head once again for the role of Frankenstein’s Monster in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s eagerly awaited new film. While talking with The Hollywood Reporter, the Oscar-winning actor shared what’s next on his slate, teasing he’ll be shaving all his hair for his upcoming role as Frankenstein.

“I’ve got to shave my head next week (for a movie),” Bale told THR, alluding to Maggie Gyllenhaal’s upcoming Warner Bros. project, where he takes on the role of Frankenstein. “I asked them to please let me hold off on doing that but everyone was going, ‘What’s wrong with Bale? What’s up with him?’ I said, ‘Just let me get through the groundbreaking and then I’ll be off to join you.'”

Gyllenhaal’s curretly untitled film, expected to begin shooting sometime in the coming weeks (no dates have been confirmed yet), has moved from Universal to Warner Bros. and is a completely separate project from Guillermo del Toro’s live-action Frankenstein adaptation for Netflix. The project reunites Bale with his The Dark Knight co-star and will be his first time working with Gyllenhaal as director.

While details like the release date and official synopsis remain under wraps, Deadline revealed the logline, which reads, “A lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aide of a Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police and a wild and radical social movement.”

The untitled horror romance will feature an all-star ensemble cast, with Bale set to star opposite Jessie Buckley, Annette Bening, Penelope Cruz, and Peter Sarsgaard. Besides directing, Gyllenhaal is also producing alongside Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Talia Kleinhendler, and Osnat Handelsman-Keren. Executive producers on the project include Courtney Kivowitz and Carla Raij.

While Bale didn’t share much beyond his excitement about reuniting with Gyllenhaal, he added, “I’ll be working with the wonderful Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jessie Buckley and so many talented actors in the cast. I’ve got to get busy getting on the rack, breaking my bones and eating lots of fertiliser or something to try and grow.”
