Grab Your Bags, Season 3 of ‘The White Lotus’ is Heading to Thailand

Grab those suitcases, we’re going to Thailand. The White Lotus will soon have a whole new destination as series creator Mike White and company are reportedly heading to the Southeast Asian country for the third season of HBO’s hit comedy-drama series. The news comes via Variety which says that White is already overseas “scoping out” potential sites for shooting, with the production to kick off shortly after.

The TV show’s executive producer David Bernad told Deadline last month that they had been trying to find ways to work in Asia. “We’ve tried to work in Asia a lot and hopefully season three will be our chance to make something happen there,” Bernad said. However, Asia had always been on the radar.

Series creator, White had earlier hinted that Season 3 may take place in Asia and centre around “death and Eastern religion and spirituality.” As per White, “The first season kind of highlighted money, and then the second season is sex. I think the third season would be maybe a satirical and funny look at death and Eastern religion and spirituality. It feels like it could be a rich tapestry to do another round at White Lotus.”

No details surrounding the season 3 cast have been shared, but chances are The White Lotus Season 3 will introduce us to a whole new ensemble of cast and characters, with Season 1 and 2’s Jennifer Coolidge’s Tanya being the apparent exception. While her return hasn’t been made official, White did discuss the prospect of bringing Tanya back for the ride.

White said, “I was thinking, it’d be so fun to bring Tanya back because she’s such a great character, but maybe that’s the journey for her, a journey to death. Not that I really wanted to kill Tanya because I love her as a character and obviously love Jennifer, but I just felt like, we’re going to Italy, she’s such a diva—a larger-than-life female archetype—it felt like we could devise our own operatic conclusion to Tanya’s life and her story. It just made me laugh to think she would like take out this cabal of killers and, after she successfully does that, she just dies this derpy death, and it just felt like that’s just so Tanya.”
