The ASICS Gel-Burz 1 x Kiko Kostadinov collection will be remembered as one of the brand’s greatest hits. Released back in 2018, these sneakers didn’t predict the retro-runner rival as much as they kick-started the entire movement, combining a dad-shoe-like appearance with the high-fashion eye of one of the world’s best designers.
So successful were these collaborations that Kostadinov and his team were brought on to advise, consult, and curate the ASICS SportStyle division. Today, that division is thriving and the two brands have connected on more than 60 silhouettes sporting the Kiko name.
The latest addition to the exclusive KIKO Kostadinov Collection is a trio of UB6-S GT-2160 sneakers ($210 AUD). This model draws inspiration from 2010-era ASICS running shoes with a redesigned tongue and vamp and GEL technology inserts throughout the midsole for all-day comfort. Available in three colourways: Mantle Green/Grape, Grey Floss/Brown Storm, and Arctic Blue/Carbon these sneakers will be raffled on the 25th of March, 2024, through the brand’s EQL launch platform.

The pair have looked to nature for this release, no doubt channelling some of our favourite elements from the ASICS x Highs and Lows GEL-1130 release with landscapes, terrain and natural phenomena informing the colourways, but also textures with matte and iridescent blocking, lucent glossy finishes, and blended tessellated patterns.
Of course, there’s plenty to like in the design of any 2010-era ASICS running shoe. However, the brands have elevated the tongue and vamp to give the model a unique layering effect where the materials sit over each other perfectly and the pant leg is arranged in such a way as to not bring any ‘dad shoe’ connotations. Finally, expect nothing but comfort with GEL technology inserts throughout the midsole.
