2024 Toyota HiLux Mild Hybrid Confirmed, Priced for Australia

The Toyota HiLux remains one of the best-selling cars in Australia, but with the impending New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) the new facelifted version has gained a 48-volt mild-hybrid system to offset its fuel consumption. Toyota is claiming a reduction in fuel consumption thanks to a small electric motor generator and a 48-volt battery, but since it cannot be driven by electric power solely, it would not be called a Hybrid.

This technology adds a seamless stop-start system to the turbo-diesel engine which reduces fuel consumption by up to 10 per cent. There’s also the benefit of running things like the air conditioner for longer before the engine is kicked back on. Don’t stress at the idea of a slow start-stop either as these 48V systems are lightning quick and will have you moving your foot hits the accelerator.

Interestingly, the engine idling speed is reduced in V-Active technology grades from 720rpm to 600rpm. This can only help fuel economy in the long run to a job site or the office.

The biggest addition for those vehicles equipped with V-Active technology is the new Multi-Terrain Select, which includes six selectable modes: Auto, Dirt, Sand, Mud and Deep Snow in high-range, and Auto, Sand, Mud and Rock in low-range.

It’s not all about new mild hybrid technology though, because all pick-up grades receive a tailgate damper with lift assist (basically a gas strut and steel cable) and all core grades (except the WorkMate, SR single-cab, and petrol variants) get a new front-end visual refresh with a new front bumper and honeycomb mesh grille.

There’s also a host of new features depending on model grades:

  • SR double-cab pick-ups with automatic transmissions add front and rear parking sensors
  • SR5, Rogue and GR Sport double-cab automatic grades gain a wireless charger, 2x rear USB-C

Choosing an SR5 grade gets you dark-finished LED headlamps, gloss black exterior mirrors, door handles, tailgate handles and a powder-coated sports bar for pick-up body styles.
