‘Sydney’s Busiest Bikeway’ is Undergoing a Mass Upgrade

Sydney’s bustling streets will soon be far safer for cyclists as construction kicks off on the Oxford Street west cycleway. The project is set to transform how thousands of riders navigate the city, promising a smoother, more secure connection between the city centre and eastern suburbs.

With wheels in motion, the nearly 1km cycleway will provide a dedicated two-way link for cyclists, alleviating the safety concerns that have plagued Sydney‘s busiest bike route. Once completed, riders can expect a seamless journey from Castlereagh Street to Taylor Square, with the added assurance of improved safety measures along the way.

According to Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore AO, Oxford Street has long been a hotspot for riders, “but it also has the most reported bike crashes of any street in our area.”

“This dedicated cycleway will give thousands of people confidence to safely get around on two wheels,” the Lord Mayor said. “This important project will also calm traffic, create a buffer that makes the footpath more pleasant and increase the number of people using the street, all of which will make Oxford Street an even more vibrant part of our city.”

But what exactly can riders expect once the cycleway is finished? According to the City of Sydney; a separator kerb between the cycleway and eastbound traffic lanes, complemented by lush garden beds, stylish street furniture, and continuous footpath treatments. Additionally, the project will see the upgrading of nine signalised intersections and pedestrian crossings, ensuring smoother transitions for cyclists and pedestrians.

Construction will be strategically staged to minimise disruption, beginning with the Liverpool Street section of the project between Elizabeth and College Streets. This marks just one part of the state government’s larger strategic vision to enhance connectivity between the eastern suburbs and the city centre.

The cycleway isn’t the only improvement in the works. Since August 2023, efforts have been underway to extend the Castlereagh Street cycleway from Liverpool Street to King Street. These improvements include a 3m-wide footpath extension, providing pedestrians more space to stroll and relax.

Moreover, adding new street lighting and tree pits, along with installing a separator kerb, sets the stage for a seamless transition to the separated cycleway. Anticipation is high as businesses eagerly await the completion of these enhancements, with four hospitality establishments already applying for outdoor dining. And we can’t forget the $39 million bike ramp being built for the Sydney Harbour Bridge cycleway.

With progress pedalling forward, Sydney’s Oxford Street cycleway is poised to become a shining example of urban innovation, fostering safer, more vibrant streets for cyclists and pedestrians alike. So, saddle up and get ready to ride into a brighter, greener future in the heart of the city.
