How to Turn Your Pre-Loved Clothes Into a Timeless Piece of Luxury

In Partnership with eBay

Few things in fashion are more satisfying than refreshing your wardrobe before the next season. It’s a chance to move on from your previous fashion moments into something new, fun, and on-trend. However, we also think it’s an opportunity to level up.

You’re already listing your favourite pre-loved fashion items online, so why not turn your earnings into something luxurious and timeless?

According to model, actor, content creator, and lifestyle connoisseur Marty Thomas, while it can be tempting to replace your favourite pre-loved fashion moments with short-term wins, you’re better off selling smart in order to attain that high-end piece you’ve always wanted.

“New clothes make us feel all warm and fuzzy, but they tend to come on- and off-trend before you even have a chance to wear them,” Marty reveals. “For that reason, while I like to play with fashion, I don’t really follow trends, but it’s important to be aware of them when selling in pursuit of that grail piece.”

With Marty on hand to guide us, let’s further explore how you can elevate your wardrobe and secure that piece you’ve always wanted. Then we’ll show you just how easy it is to list your pre-loved fashion on eBay. This is our quest for style, and it could easily be yours, too.

It’s Time to Think About Levelling-Up

Before we get into the art of listing items, let’s give some thought to wardrobe upgrades. To that end, we sat down with Marty for his tips on how he’s levelled up his wardrobe with a sentimental swap.

With the seasons changing, he says it’s time to think about that timeless luxury piece you’ve always wanted: the shearling leather jacket, the designer coat, the silk button-up shirt for the warmer days, and a pair of designer sunglasses. It’s all about turning a handful of those unworn, pre-loved pieces into one you’ll keep and wear into the future. That said, it’s also about knowing when it’s time to part with a piece to give it a second life, something Marty knows all too well.

“I sold a beautiful cobalt blue designer jacket to a dear friend because he desperately wanted it. That was in LA in the early ‘90s, when I had just started modelling and acting. Times have changed since then, and now you can easily buy and sell designer clothes like these through eBay.

“Today, when I choose to sell signature items, it’s because they are unique or rare. Standard wardrobe items have a set value, but vintage items are more complex to price and sometimes more desirable, too.”

One of eBay’s standout features for buyers is its large selection of rare and sought-after fashion items. You’ll find rare pieces from brands like Arc’teryx, Barbour, FEAR OF GOD, and Stussy, among all your favourite fashion brands.

We spend more time than we’re willing to admit hunting for unique items on eBay, and if an item is sold out in-store, you’ll probably find it on eBay.

When shopping for these unique items, it’s always good to know they’re authentic and as described. According to Marty, to succeed in selling, you have to portray the item honestly: “I feel the key to styling and selling anything online is to portray the item as honestly as possible. Use good lighting, show any faults, make it look good, and then…tell the story of that piece of clothing.”

Listing an Item on eBay is Fast and Easy

More than a place to save money on luxury and designer fashion, eBay is a hub of buyers and sellers listing your favourite (and most grail-worthy) products. We often come here to find rare-and-sought-after sneakers and leather goods with the brand’s Authenticity Guarantee on sneakers and handbags. However, it’s more recently become the place where we list our pre-loved fashion items for sale because it’s incredibly quick and easy to list. Best of all, items can sell quickly if you list them correctly.

How to list items on eBay in 9 easy steps:

  1. Let eBay find a match for your item: eBay will auto-input critical information and speed up the process
  2. Select the condition of your item: New with tags, new without tags, new with defects, pre-owned
  3. Refine the title: Ensure the automatically entered title is accurate. We recommend ensuring the brand name, colour, and size are included
  4. Refine item specifics: Check the automatically entered specifics are correct and add as many item specifics as you can for your best chance to sell
  5. Add photos: You can choose up to 24 photos; make the most of this by including high-quality images from all angles
  6. Write a description (with the help of AI): You can use the included AI tool to help write a description
  7. Set your price (or auction): Add a Buy it Now price, allow offers, and schedule a listing
  8. Choose your postage: eBay automatically calculates this and gives you several options. We enjoy going with Sendle, which offers competitive rates that can save you up to 50 per cent. Sendle also offers 100 per cent carbon-neutral deliveries
  9. Refine your listing preferences: Payment method, handling time, location, returns

We want to highlight the speed and ease of listing because this is not a case of manually inputting every little piece of information about the item you’re going to sell. Based on current listings, eBay is likely to have a lot of the information it needs about the product. All you have to do is enter the product name, let it find the same item, and then enter the size, type, style, material, condition, and colour. You can also use its price indicator tool to gauge what others have sold similar items for.

From there, you refine the options that have been pre-selected for you: condition, brand, size, type, style, colour, and model. Then, you add images, let the AI write a description for you, choose the postage that best suits your needs, and set a price (or choose to auction the item). That’s it!

Man of Many’s eBay selling tip: Our fashion editors are experienced sellers on eBay, and they say that the more specific you make a product description, the more likely it is to sell. For example, if you’re selling a waterproof shell jacket from a sought-after brand, add information about its construction: what it is made from, what conditions it is suitable for, whether the zippers are waterproof, and what unique features it has.

The good news is that buyers shopping for more luxurious (and expensive) items on eBay are covered by the brand’s Authenticity Guarantee*—sneakers above $150 and handbags and wallets above $350—adding peace of mind to their purchase. You just need to look for the blue tick to know that the sneaker or wallet you are purchasing will be expertly verified by eBay’s authenticators before it’s shipped to you. This gives you a reason to stop thinking laterally, invest in luxury, and get that timeless piece you’ve always wanted.

We’ve shown you how easy it is to sell and buy on eBay, so now the ball’s in your court. Take a look in your wardrobe, list those pre-loved fashion items on eBay, turn them into that timeless piece of luxury you always wanted, and start levelling up your fashion game.
