To those who think rum starts with Bacardi and ends with Captain Morgan, please allow the 2017 World Rum Awards to dictate otherwise. Competitions aside, if you’ve never sipped on expertly crafted premium rum you don’t what you’re missing, with the best expressions offering complex layers of syrupy, aromatic sweetness that must be sipped to be believed. If you need a few guideposts, start with the winners below and branch out from there. Or stick to whisky if you must–we’re not here to peer pressure you into anything. Nonetheless, if you have just a few curious bones in your body you still should scope the list below. Presented by The Drinks Report, here are the top winners from the 2017 World Rum Awards.
World’s Best Gold Rum – St Vincent Distillers Mutineers Gold XO Special Reserve Rum
The name might be a mouthful to say, but this sure sounds like a spirit we’d like to have a mouth full of. Distilled in the foothills of a volcano before being aged in oak casks, St Vincent Mutineers Gold XO Special Reserve Rum offers warm, layered flavours of dark sugar and fruit while retaining a fundamental liquored essence. The finish is mellow and dry, meaning in spite of its name it won’t pillage and ruin your taste buds, rather lull them into submission by way of stunning taste.
World’s Best Dark Rum – Bundaberg Distillers’ Collection Solera
Australia, represent!!! Woo hoo! Legendary brand Bundaberg brings its A game with this masterpiece in a bottle. Every aspect of production on this amazing spirit sounds like something arrived upon after decades of painstaking trial and error. That includes the complicated solera process, which ages and blends the spirit in special vats. If you’re thinking about trying rum neat and exploring it for all its delicious potential, we can safely recommend you start with the Bundaberg Distillers’ Collection Solera Rum….assuming you can find (or afford) it of course.
World’s Best Flavoured Rum – Spirits of Old Man Rum Project One
Don’t be thrown off by use of the word “flavoured” because this delectable spirit is anything but derivative or artificial. Using a blend of three aged Caribbean rums, Spirits of Old Man Rum Project One saturates the palate with rich, exotic notes of coconut, caramel, honey and banana. The bottle is legit as well.
Best Spiced Rum – Ableforth’s Rumbullion! XO 15 Years Old
UK brand Ableforth is all over the top world spirits awards slots in 2017 so it’s safe to say they offer some pretty incredible selections. From the Rumbullion! XO 15 Years Old expect tons of dense, creamy sweetness layered with notes of orange marmalade, cinnamon and spice. A true symphony of texture and flavour that plays out on your taste buds.
Best White Rum – Old Captain Caribbean White Rum
This straightforward 2017 World Rum Award winner checks off all the necessary marks with a smooth texture and mildly fruity flavour. Given how affordable it is, we’re thinking Old Captain might be best served in a Daiquiri or with a somewhat generous amount of coke.
