Mercedes-Benz has always been synonymous with the utmost in sophistication and design, and they have no reason to stop now. Accordingly, the 2018 Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV is a sight to behold. Available in four models, the G-Class touts some seriously epic ground clearance, with the chassis hovering 17.2 inches in the air. The powerful SUV also features three lockable differentials for improved traction control, and the latest in extra sensory technology. Will the privilege of driving one cost you? Of course it will. But you knew that as soon as you saw the words Mercedes-Benz.
Along with the upgraded tiers of traction and control comes a twin-turbo V8 engine with 416 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque on the G550 base model. Switch to the AMG G63 model and you get a 5.5-litre V8 that delivers 563 hp and 561 lb-ft of torque. At the tippy top of the spectrum is the AMG G65, which hosts a 6.0-litre twin turbo V-12 engine that’s good for 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque. To put it another way, the AMG G65 is really, really powerful.
Included on each model is permanent four-wheel drive and seven-speed automatic transmission. Also featured is a dual side-exit exhaust system, LED lights and 19″ AMG wheels. That’s joined by a range of potential upgrades or add-ons like AMG Sport exhaust and an AMG high-performance braking system.
Naturally, the G-Class interior is nothing short of luxurious. We’re talking Nappa leather upholstery, heated and ventilated seats, ambient lighting and a sophisticated infotainment system. Suffice to say, comfort is one thing you can always count on Mercedes-Benz to provide. The G-Class also delivers top notch off-road performance. As for other things like fuel economy and on-road handling, many reviewers aren’t all that impressed given the high price point. Of course, that would never stop us from owning a G-Class if we could afford one. It is, after all, a beautiful SUV.
