While concept cars are always good for stirring up excitement, few are ever actually produced. To which Porsche says: “Hold my beer”. Indeed, the premium automaker is turning a previous concept into hard reality by unleashing a limited edition run of 911 Speedsters in 2019. Some think of it as a last hurrah before Porsche pulls the plug on the 911 series altogether, allowing the brand to focus its attention on popular models like the Cayenne or Panamera. If that is the case, a special thing just got all the more so. Of course, one doesn’t really need peripheral reasons to enjoy a vehicle that’s as directly awesome as this one.
Pairing classic heritage and modern flourish to brilliant effect, the 2019 Porsche 911 Speedster convertible takes body cues from the 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet, with a chassis ripped straight out of the GT3 playbook. In contrast to the 911 Cabrio, however, the Speedster features a cut down windshield, a fabric tonneau top rather in lieu of a traditional soft top, and a tighter, sportier design. It also comes dressed in a swath of lightweight carbon fibre, which makes up the front fenders and hood. Powering the car is a flat-six engine, which generates 500hp at 9,000 RPM, and comes joined by six-speed manual transmission.
In honour of the year Porsche’s 911 was first introduced, the brand is limiting production to a mere 1,948 units. Price details are currently unavailable, but one thing is for sure: this nimble beauty won’t be cheap. On the other hand, few automotive legends ever are.
