New York has served as inspiration for countless numbers of creative projects. Bang & Olufsen referred to the skyline of the city that never sleeps to create their Beosound 1 New York Edition. The shiny, metallic surface of the speaker clearly represents the many skyscrapers of the Big Apple, as does the unique shape.
The speakers are made of aluminum and use a gradient finish that transitions from black to natural aluminum. The CMF finish for the piece was realized in Bang & Olufsen’s aluminum factory in Struer, Denmark, which has been doing stunning work for the last 50 years. The process is very involved and requires the extruded aluminum pieces to be “milled, polished, and anodized—an electrochemical treatment that forms a durable oxide on the surface of the material.” After that treatment, specialists invest hours in fine-tuning the gradient effect. As you can imagine, it’s a laborious process, so Bang & Olufsen will be limiting the number of speakers they make to just 1,200 examples.
But it’s not just looks that set this speaker apart. The New York Edition follows suit with all other Beosound 1 speakers, using 360-degree sound dispersion. With a 40-watt class D amplifier, the full range driver is able to pump out the sound. The addition of another 20-watt class D amplifier for the woofer pushes the sound quality even higher. Because it is battery-powered with a rechargeable battery that offers up to 12 hours of playtime, the speaker is portable and can be easily taken with you wherever you are. Beosound also uses wireless technology and comes with Chromecast built-in and can use Apple AirPlay 2 and Bluetooth to access your music. It also connects with multi-room speakers. Finally, it also features Google Assistant.
The Beosound 1 New York Edition speakers are available for $2,000. Not bad for a set of speakers that lives up to Old Blue Eyes’ love song to New York, “If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere.”
