For a moment at Unpacked 2024 it looked like Samsung was going to pull a ‘one more thing’ rabbit out of its hat with the announcement of an exciting new wearable: the Galaxy Ring. Those of us in attendance watched with rabid anticipation as animated stars swirled onto the enormous screens surrounding the Unpacked stage, followed by the slow emergence of an enormous metallic object looking like something out of 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Fortunately the real Galaxy Ring will be much smaller when it finally arrives, and while further details were not forthcoming (Samsung, you little tease), it was certainly enough to pique our interest. The arrival of the wearable will create a whole new category for Samsung and build upon the tech giant’s health platform. The ring will feature an as-yet-unconfirmed range of sensors that will likely track your sleep, blood oxygen levels, heart rate, etc.

According to Samsung, the device is designed to support 24/7 wear, offering meaningful health insights in a more comfortable form factor. The Galaxy Ring is not intended to replace the Galaxy Watch, but rather complement it and the rest of Samsung’s ecosystem. We’re very curious to see how Samsung manages to pull all of this off, particularly when it comes to battery life as smart rings are not renowned for being like the Energizer Bunny. Saying that, battery tech is constantly improving and Samsung consistently delivers in that department.
In addition, we imagine that given AI was so front and centre at Unpacked 2024, it will probably be deployed to enhance the Galaxy Ring experience somehow; likely by interpreting data and presenting it in useful, easy-to-digest ways.

If we were the speculating types—and from this article you can clearly see that we are—we’d say chances are you can expect to get a closer look at the Galaxy Ring when Samsung launches the next generation of its foldable devices in the back half of 2024. Whether or not the Galaxy Ring will actually launch this year remains to be seen.
