- Apple Watch Series 12 introduces a new Health Sensing System that measures heart rate every five seconds and HRV up to 24 times more often.
- A new Readiness score uses activity, training load, sleep and vitals to tell you whether to recover, pace yourself or push harder.
- Apple Watch Series 12 starts at AUD$649, with pre-orders already open ahead of its 18 September release.
Apple says the new Apple Watch Series 12 can give you a better understanding of your “fitness and physiological state”, as the new Apple Watch gets better at recognising signs of stress and recovery; when your body is under strain, when it’s recovering and when you might be ready to push that little bit extra to get yourself when you’re ready to push harder.
Much of that precision stems from how closely this new smart watch monitors your beating heart. The new Health Sensing System measures your heart rate every five seconds throughout the day, while heart rate variability, or HRV, is measured up to 24 times more often than it did in previous generations. Apple describes HRV as a key indicator of stress and recovery. Whether those signals are being influenced by how hard you’re training, how well you’re sleeping or your general health, the Apple Watch Series 12 wants to know what your body needs so it can tell you what to do next.
All that health tech feeds into one of the Series 12’s most useful new features: Readiness. Rather than letting you know what happened yesterday, the Apple Watch tells you what your body might be capable of today.

1/4Apple Keeps Watch of Your Heart
Apple says the Series 12 offers the most accurate heart-rate sensing in a wearable. It’s a bold claim. But Apple backs it up with an in-house study involving more than 1,000 participants and comparisons against other leading wearables.
The more interesting change in heart-rate sensing is how often it takes a reading. Even in everyday use, Apple has added larger, more power-efficient green LEDs to the optical heart sensor, letting the Series 12 sample your heart rate every five seconds throughout the day, while HRV gets its own new section in the Heart Rate app for on-demand, deeper analysis. Apple says those more frequent readings should also make your rings more accurate.
To make all that data easier to dive into, Apple has split HRV into two separate views. Recovery HRV highlights daily stress and recovery signals, while overall HRV gives a broader view of your health over time. Overnight vitals now incorporate recovery HRV against your personal baseline, while a new daytime vitals view will display changes before you go to bed.

Readiness Tells You Whether to Push or Back Off
Readiness pulls everything together. It combines signals from recent activity, training load, vitals and sleep to generate a readiness score from 0 to 10. From there, Apple gives you one of four recommendations: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It.
Those scores can change throughout the day. From the moment you wake up, the system keeps adjusting as it collects new information. Whether you’ve pushed yourself a little too hard at the gym or there’s a noticeable change in your vitals, every bit of data it collects can shift the recommendation to push forward or back off a bit. Apple says it developed the scoring system using data from its Heart and Movement Study, alongside exercise scientists and physicians.
This is Apple moving closer to the recovery-focused metrics that companies like WHOOP, Garmin and Oura have been exploring for years. And clearly, Apple’s Readiness score is screaming “Go For It!”
1/4What Else Is New in the Apple Watch Series 12?
Health is the headline upgrade, but the S11 chip does much more than track your heart. It also powers a collection of new Audio Intelligence features.
Sound Recognition can alert you to things like alarms, sirens, doorbells or a baby crying, while Live Rewind can surface the previous 15 seconds of a conversation as text. It sounds dystopian on paper, but less so than a pair of smart glasses would be. There’s also Siri Recap, which can generate high-level summaries of conversations, although Live Rewind and Siri Recap won’t arrive in beta until later this year.
Before privacy concerns arise, Apple says the features don’t create or store audio recordings. The raw audio is processed in an isolated part of the S11 chip and then immediately deleted.
Cellular models also get 5G support for the first time, and Apple has redesigned its step tracking with new machine-learning algorithms and another big claim: Apple says the Series 12 is the most accurate smartwatch for counting steps. There’s also a new Steps complication, which lets you keep an eye on the running total straight from the watch face. Still no word on those screen-free wearables, though.
One thing that hasn’t changed is its battery life, which still offers up to 24 hours of everyday use. Outdoor workout battery life is up 25 per cent, to about 10 hours. Charging has also improved: 15 minutes on the dock gives users up to 12 hours of extra battery life. Quick charge before bed, and you’ve got all the sleep data you need. Another 15-minute charge while you make a coffee and get ready for the day, and you’ve got enough battery for another 12 hours.
1/2Apple Watch Series 12 Australian Price and Release Date
Apple Watch Series 12 starts at AUD$649, with pre-orders open now ahead of availability beginning Friday, 18 September. The Apple Watch Series 12 is available in 42mm and 46mm sizes across aluminium and titanium, while Apple is also bringing back ceramic in pearl white and night blue. Aluminium models get the new Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says is 60 per cent tougher than the Ion-X glass used on Series 11.
Whether you’re due for an upgrade, stepping into the world of smartwatches for the first time, or think the Readiness score is the encouragement you need to “Go For It”, the Series 12 has plenty to offer. And with all that extra heart-rate and HRV data, Apple’s smartwatch, which already knew plenty about what you were doing, now has a better idea of whether your body is actually ready for the day ahead.
