Best New Games – November 2023

So what if your backlog is growing, stretching and swelling to nightmarish proportions? November is here, and this month delivers like your friendly neighbourhood Uber driver! The biggest and arguably most anticipated title of the month is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, as the popular franchise continues to be a gaming juggernaut.

Elsewhere, Super Mario RPG gives us the second new Mario game in less than a month. EA debuts its new WRC franchise, Assassin’s Creed goes full VR; there’s an indie adventure set in an Australian wasteland, and everyone’s favourite family of Blue Heelers score their first digital adventure in Bluey The Videogame. Find all this and more as we dive deep into the best new games of November 2023.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III

  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation, Xbox
  • Release date: November 10

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is the direct sequel to last year’s Modern Warfare II, with a narrative surrounding Russian villains and world-ending threats. The campaign introduces open combat missions, providing more players’ choice for tackling objectives. Choose a loadout to suit your style, then Implement stealth or go guns-blazing.

Celebrating 20 years of Call of Duty, multiplayer revives 16 maps from 2009’s MWII, each modernised with new features. There are also 12 brand new maps, plus Ground War mode receives its next evolution. On an undead front, Zombies receives its largest map to date, with an original story, missions and secrets to discover.

Super Mario RPG

  • Platform: Switch
  • Release date: November 17

A remake of the 1996 SNES classic, Super Mario RPG teams the persistent plumber with Peach, Bowser and several original characters on a quest to stop the troublemaking Smithy Gang and save Star Road.

Explore vibrant environments and take on familiar Mushroom Kingdom enemies through classic turn-based battles. It’s the offbeat Mario adventure from your youth looking better than ever, or more Nintendo goodness if you’ve already moved on from October’s Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

EA Sports WRC

  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation, Xbox
  • Release date: November 3

EA Sports WRC is the official videogame of the FIA World Rally Championship and the first developed by the team behind the DiRT Rally series. Players can design and drive their own original creations, get behind the wheel and race in recent real-world events.

Battle the elements across dirt, snow and asphalt in a total of 17 locations, including Monte Carlo, Portugal, Kenya and Japan. There are all the drivers, teams and liveries from the 2023 WRC season, including 70 authentically recreated historic vehicles. Career, Championship, Time Trial, Rally and cross-platform multiplayer are all available for your driving pleasure.

Assassin’s Creed Nexus

  • Platforms: Meta Quest VR headsets
  • Release date: November 17

Assassin’s Creed Nexus is a full-blown historical action-adventure playable in VR. Explore open-world locations across three time periods playing as heroes from the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Climb and parkour everywhere, hide in crowds, create distractions and duel, parry and thrust on the quest to retrieve powerful lost artefacts. The game looks incredible! But the entry price is steep unless you already happen to own a Meta Quest VR headset. Sadly, I do not.

Warioware: Move it!

  • Platform: Switch
  • Release date: November 3

One of Nintendo’s key drawcards is the craziness that’s possible thanks to its motion controls. Warioware: Move it! is the latest game that will have you standing and waving controllers around the room and laughing at the absurdity both on and off the screen. Shake, punch, dance and wiggle through 200 lightning-fast microgames. Up to four players can join the action, each using a single Joy-Con controller.

Bluey The Videogame

  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch
  • Release date: November 17

Bluey, Bingo, Bandit and Chilli score a new adventure of pixelated proportions. Set across four interactive episodes, players explore the Heeler house, playgrounds, creek and beach and take on mini-games inspired by episodes of the hit show.

Go on this wholesome adventure alone or play together with family and friends. Collect items for your sticker book and uncover hidden references from the show. There is no word on whether Lucky’s Dad appears with a string of his signature quips, but we can dream.

Persona 5 Tactica

  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch
  • Release date: November 17

The best Japanese RPG of the past decade scores a welcome spin-off. Persona 5 Tactica sees Joker and the Phantom Thieves in a down-the-rabbit-hole scenario, trapped in a realm under tyrannical oppression.

The turn-based combat of the mainline Persona franchise is replaced with a more tactical approach, akin to Final Fantasy Tactics or even South Park: The Fractured but Whole. Assemble a team of familiar heroes, overthrow your enemies using powerful Personas and lead an uprising in a brand new storyline set within the Persona universe.

Broken Roads

  • Platforms: PC, Xbox
  • Release date: November 14

Broken Roads brings exploration, strategic turn-based combat and meaningful choices to a desolated Australian wasteland. Inspired by classic isometric RPGs, Broken Roads blends traditional genre elements with a classless system for near-unlimited character development and a unique morality system for influencing quests, dialogue and characters.

Build a party of up to five characters and explore authentic, hand-drawn Aussie locations in a world rich with content where decisions are not clear-cut good or bad, but what you choose will undoubtedly shape the ongoing narrative.
