With its official launch in the U.S., Melbourne’s own Starward Distillery is sending delicious Australian flavour onto American soil. Made from 100% malted barley and aged in un-charred Australian red wine barrels, Starward Nova Whisky delivers vibrant colour, smooth texture, and lightly fruity taste. Since its 2016 debut, the spirit has won numerous prestigious awards, including two gold medals at the 2016 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and “Best Australian Single Malt” by the World Whiskies Awards in 2016 and 2017. Whether this tasty sipper will stand out amidst America’s oversaturated whiskey market is something only time can tell, but there’s no question as to its quality and distinction.
By capitalising on Melbourne’s famously dynamic temperatures, Starward is able to accelerate the whisky ageing process, adopting a method known as Elemental Maturation (also known as “Melbourne years”). In turn, expressions like Nova develop surprisingly complex flavours and notes in relatively little time. Giving this single malt all the more character is its total maturation in locally sourced (and wet-filled) red wine barrels, which once held Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir. The red wine influence mellows out the spirit’s malted barley component, cultivating light texture and prominent notes of berries and vanilla. At the finish are subtle blasts of oak and baking spice.
Like a classic red wine, Nova Single Malt Whisky goes down great with a meal. In fact, brand founder David Vitale created Starward Distillery with the goal of crafting easy-drinking whiskies that pair well with food. His expertly honed ambitions have paved the way for some truly delicious statements. Now, Americans will be getting in on the action.
