I love watching cooking videos. Whether it’s taking a journey through Parts Unknown or simply diving into the questionable recipes that have infiltrated that TikTok recently, I can’t get enough. But there is something oddly mesmerising about Meals By Cug. The self-proclaimed KING of DC (Diet Coke), Cugine aka Meals By Cug’s videos aren’t groundbreaking or innovative, in fact, most of the time, he gives little to no insight about the food at all, and yet it all works. Social media is a great place to find people doing strange things for no apparent reason. Mikey Mac Obrien is one of those people. His account @mikeymaybeme, could be described as ‘stunt powerlifting’. There, you’ll witness him ollie a skateboard while holding a 185-pound barbell. You’ll also find him lifting 410 pounds of weights on a barbell, suspended by a chain from his head and waist while playing Für Elise with his feet on a giant keyboard. Or you can watch a near tragedy when he attempts to deadlift an ungodly weight while he balances himself on top 4 energy drink cans. @mikeymaybeme makes content that absolutely no one ever asked for, but I’m glad it exists.

The Great Southern Region in WA is Australia’s largest wine hub, an area approximately 200x100km with almost 50 different vineyards. Due to the size and location, the climate ranges from Mediterranean, maritime, and continental which makes for some very diverse grape varietals and some unique and delicious wines. Howard Park Wines has unveiled a selection of new vintage releases in its “Flint Rock” regional collection: A chardonnay, pinot noir, shiraz and riesling, all using grapes from the Great Southern’s three primary sub-regions (Mount Barker, Porongurup and Frankland River).
The four new releases champion the family winery’s dedication to producing elegant, cellar-worthy wines while highlighting the very best of the Great Southern wine region. My personal favourite was the 2021 Flint Rock Riesling. Although they’ve recommended cellaring for up to seven years, it was a fantastic drop enjoyed on a hot summer’s evening earlier this week – Think citrusy, fruity but not sweet, and extremely refreshing. At $28 each, I’d suggest buying some for both now and cellaring, especially the 2020 pinot and 2018 shiraz.

This one is for seafood lovers. After finding myself at Calita Bondi multiple Sundays in a row when it first opened at the end of 2020, it’s safe to say I’m hooked. Calita is located across the beach, providing a beautiful scenic view perfect for taking a romantic partner for a sunset dinner, an elegant seafood family dinner, or brunch with friends as I recently did for my birthday, where the service was excellent.
They’ve joined with local suppliers to maintain an incredible selection of fresh, sustainably sourced seafood ingredients. You can find a selection of house-made tacos, shared plates, and various drinks choices, including a refreshing mango margarita. I would also recommend the Governor’s taco, which is packed with flavours. It still doesn’t beat Mexico or anywhere in the Northern hemisphere, but it sure does the trick for now until travelling is back on in full swing.
