The release of the first photos of James Packer’s new superyacht has something for everyone: whether you’re awed by conspicuously gargantuan wealth, fascinated by huge boats, obsessed by celebrity, or addicted to feeding your seething jealousy, these pics will scratch your itch.
The 107-metre ocean-going behemoth that emerged from Benetti’s Italian warehouse last month is the largest private vessel of its kind the company has ever built. To put it in layman’s terms, it’s frigging massive.
When it hits the waves it will bear the name IJE, after the initials of Packer’s children Indigo, Jackson and Emmanuelle, and boast a cruising speed of 16 knots with a top speed of 18.5 knots.
This is easier to visualise if you know exactly what a knot is, but rest assured it’s a lot faster than something that big should be, not to mention more buoyant.
Costing $200 million total, when you see the IJE’s magnificence, you can’t deny that it’s a great way to blow a wad of cash that size – if, of course, showing the world how large a boat you own is a high priority for you.
And let’s face it, it’s making that kind of thing a priority that helped make the Packers rich in the first place.
