The 1984 Mercedes-Benz 240 GD, short for “Galaendewagen,” started out its life as a transport for the German military. As such, it was a no frills vehicle that had the sole purpose of getting troops wherever they needed to go. The GD was a vehicle capable of going anywhere in a reliable fashion. The GD being offered by Sotheby’s hasn’t departed from that utilitarian heritage.

The GD returned to its military heritage with the matte olive green paint job that matches the olive vinyl seats in the interior. Instrumentation was kept to a “need-to-know” basis—only the things you need to know are displayed in the most basic and old school fashion. You’ll also find the jerry cans, hi-lift jack, and knobby tires you would expect from a military-style vehicle. The GD has the added feature of a full length roof rack that comes with a rooftop tent.

As for going anywhere, the 2.4L Mercedes-Benz four cylinder diesel engine has plenty of power, with 101 ft-lbs of torque. That kind of power makes up for the low 71 horsepower and top speed of only 71 miles per hour. The four speed manual transmission offers four wheel drive. This is a rig that’s more at home off than on the road.
Check it out

Have you subscribed to Man of Many? You can also follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
