DJI Ronin 4D: The World’s First 4-Axis Gimbal Cinema Camera

You’ll recognise the brand name for their civilian drones, but now DJI is looking deeper into the cinematography space with an exciting new model. The DJI Ronin 4D looks to combine an all-new full-frame Zenmuse X9 gimbal camera, 4-axis stabilization,  LiDAR focusing system, and an unrivalled video transmission and control system in a single unit. Packed with features and designed for professionals the 4D showcases the brand’s technical prowess and we’ve broken down all the specifications below.

DJI Ronin 4D Technical Specifications

  • Camera: X9-8K 8K@75 fps, X9-6K 6K@60fps or 4K@120fps
  • Lens mount: DJI DL or Leica M
  • ISO: 800/5,000 and over 14 stops of dynamic range.
  • Dynamic range: 14 stops (claimed).
  • Storage: USB SSD, CFexpress Type-B, PROSSD 1TB.
  • Microphones: Built-in, 3.5mm mic ports, XLR ports via expansion plate.
  • Battery: 2.5-hours shooting time.
  • Weight: 4.67 kg (10.3 pounds)

The new full-frame model is built around two new ‘Zenmuse X9’ gimbal camera options. The X9-6K captures RAW in either 6K@60fps or 4K@120fps, the second model, the X9-8K gives you the option to shoot 8K@75fps. Both models can internally record Apple ProRes and ProRes RAW files, leaving plenty of options for editing in post.

We’d call the new Ronin 4D a stat sheet stuffer across the scoreboard. DJI claims dual-native EI of 800/5,000 and over 14 stops of dynamic range to help capture scenes with rich colour grades. The brands proprietary DJI Cinema Color System (DCCS) delivers natural skin tones regardless of lighting and offers seamless integration when shooting with multiple cinema cameras. We love the integration of nine-stop physical ND filters that make it easy to adjust to changing lighting conditions, especially when outside on location.

While we’re yet to put the camera to the test, professionals will appreciate the offering of three storage methods (USB SSD, CFexpress Type-B and DJI’s proprietary PROSSD 1TB), built-in microphones (with 3.5mm mic ports and XLR ports via an expansion plate, long-range (20,000 feet) video transmission at 1080p/60p to remote monitor setups and 2.5 hours of shooting time.

4-Axis Stabilisation

Active Z-axis. A few words that get even the most basic cinematographer excited, and something that the Ronin 4D offers for the first time in an integrated unit. We’ll spell it out in laymen’s terms, you can pick this camera up and shoot while walking, running, or moving around, with no need to practice pacing or rely on any form of external equipment. The application for technologies like this is truly endless. Videos taken on complex uneven ground are sure to be smooth without any trace of the operator’s footsteps. We simply can’t wait to test this out for ourselves.

Now for the technical. The Ronin 4D utilises an advanced new algorithm that processes inputs from a set of downward ToF sensors, forward and downward dual-visual sensors, built-in IMU, and barometer. And you’ll have no problem putting the full 2.5hours capture time into effect, the DJI Ronin 4D is lighter and smaller than most cinema cameras mounted on a professional three-axis stabilizer. By reducing the size and complexity of a professional camera setup into a small form factor that’s really never existed before.

LiDAR Focus Technology

  • Ranging points: 43,000
  • Focus modes: Manual focus, autofocus, and DJI’s specific Automated Manual Focus (AMF).

The Ronin 4D utilises advanced LiDAR technology to measure the distance to the subject without relying on surface textures or hunting for edges – the result is faster focus speeds with un-compromised image quality. In technical terms, the LiDAR Range Finder continuously generates precise laser measurements by simultaneously casting over 43,200 ranging points reaching as far as 10 meters. In automated manual mode, the user can intervene at any point to choose focus points, while the focus wheel takes care of things at other times.
