Complaints Policy and Process

Overview

Man of Many values reader feedback and addresses complaints through a structured process managed by their complaints-handling staff and the Director (the Editor-in-Chief or their delegate). To submit a complaint, please email [email protected].

Initial Assessment

Upon receiving a complaint, the Director evaluates whether to proceed or discontinue consideration based on several criteria:

  • Whether the complaint meets basic requirements regarding what can be complained about, who can complain, and proper procedures
  • Whether another process would be more appropriate, such as referral to a third party or industry body
  • Whether the matter has already been addressed to Man of Many’s satisfaction
  • Whether a breach of their Editorial Guidelines is likely, even if allegations are factually correct
  • Whether resources required would be reasonably proportionate to potential breaches
  • Other reasons rendering the complaint unsuitable for further consideration

Secondary Complaints

Complaints from individuals not directly affected by published material may be classified as “secondary complaints.” The Director additionally considers:

  • Risk of compounding privacy violations or harm to directly affected parties
  • Value of establishing precedent regarding standards application
  • Resource proportionality for all involved parties
  • Whether the primary subject’s participation is necessary

Multiple Complaints

When several complaints address identical material, the Director may involve only some complainants in further review. Individual notifications occur when practicable; otherwise, outcomes involving significant numbers of complaints are published on the Australian Press Council’s website.

Complaint Handling

Unless discontinued, Man of Many responds promptly via phone or email, focusing on whether they have already taken action or will consider doing so regarding the complained-about material.

Discontinuance and Review

If discontinued, complainants receive notification and may request review within seven days. Unsuccessful reviews result in case closure. Unresolved complaints may be escalated to appropriate industry bodies.

Man of Many commits to cooperating with Australian Press Council requests and publishing any resulting adjudications.
