Richard Danne’s Iconic NASA Space Watch is a Journey Through Time

First introduced in 1975, the NASA “worm” logo was retired in 1992. But you can’t keep a good design down, and today that logo is back and will be used on American rockets once again. The design was dreamt up by Richard Danne, who is now 90 years old and was known as the “Father of the NASA design program.”

To commemorate the return of the logo, watchmaker Anicorn called upon Danne for help in designing a limited edition watch that would feature the worm logo. Danne came through with his first ever watch design. “The watch design is inspired by Space itself—its beauty, its silence, its rotating planets,” says Danne. “The project caps an extraordinary involvement with the NASA family, one like no other and very close to my heart.”

The NASA Space Watch comes in two colourways: Space Black and Jet Silver. Two “planets”—one red and the other blue—rotate around the dial, representing hours and minutes. The watch is built around a Miyota 9015 4Hz automatic movement with 42 hours of power reserve. The movement features 24 jewels and operates at a vibration frequency of 28800 vibrations per hour. This particular movement is also known for its accuracy, coming within 10 to 30 seconds per day.

The watch is rated for 5 ATM of water resistance, so even though you’ll want to treat it as a collector’s item, you can still safely wear this watch. It comes with both a black stainless steel bracelet and a black leather strap. The watch is presented in a double-layered metal film canister that is vacuum packed. In addition to the watch, buyers will get an embroidered NASA patch, a numbered and autographed plate, and a booklet. You can purchase the watch from Anicorn for $1,030. Delivery is slated for late October.
