- BAIT and G-SHOCK have teamed up again for the limited-edition DW5600 “Yamagata’s Finest”, inspired by a banana at its sweetest point of ripeness.
- The fruity yellow-and-brown design extends across the strap, packaging and custom backlight, complete with a new “Shawty with Freckles” banana mascot.
- Available through BAIT Chapter stores and BAITMe.com on 30 September for USD $170 (roughly AUD $243).
There’s a very small window of opportunity where a banana is at its most delicious. Leave it too long, or out in the sun, and you’re probably making banana bread this weekend. That is, unless you’re BAIT, who decided in that fleeting moment that they had enough reason to turn a G-SHOCK into a very ripe banana instead.
Get peeling because the result of that decision is the BAIT x G-SHOCK DW5600 “Yamagata’s Finest”, a limited-edition take on the familiar square digital watch dressed up to look just like a banana at its sweetest. The tongue-in-cheek collaboration is all about timing, an idea that’s ripe for the picking when it comes to watches.
But there’s more to this fruit-inspired watch than the bright yellow and a few brown spots. “Yamagata’s Finest” refers to Yamagata Prefecture, home to Yamagata Casio, a place Casio lovingly calls the “mother factory” of G-SHOCK. And while they’ve done very little to the actual functionality of the DW5600, who cares? It’s bananas!
It’s a Banana, Right Down to the Backlight
It’s everything you love about the DW5600, except now it looks just as good in the fruit bowl as it will on your wrist. The BAIT x G-SHOCK DW5600 “Yamagata’s Finest” gets a bright yellow resin case and strap, with brown speckling designed to mimic the freckles that appear as a banana ripens. BAIT has even darkened the end of the strap to resemble the tip of the fruit – you know, the bit you hold onto when you’re peeling a banana. They also added a faux produce sticker for its new mascot, “Shawty with Freckles”.
The banana theme continues beyond the ripening sun and into the night. Because when the lights go out, you can activate the backlight, and the kissing banana graphic of Shawty with Freckles lights up across the display. You’ll also find Shawty on the special yellow can and box, alongside more fictional BAIT Farms branding. Sorry, everyone, but this particular farmer’s market only sells watches.
Underneath all that fruit is that same DW5600 we know and love. If you need a refresh, the watch measures in at 42.8 mm wide and 13.4 mm thick, with 200 metres of water resistance and the expected time, date, calendar, stopwatch, countdown timer and alarm functions.
How Much Is the BAIT x G-SHOCK DW5600?
The BAIT x G-SHOCK “Yamagata’s Finest” will set you back about USD $170, or roughly AUD $243. But you’ll have to be quick, as the watch first became available at BAIT Santa Ana on 29 September and is due for a wider release through all BAIT Chapter stores and online at BAITMe.com on 30 September.
If anybody out there needed a banana-themed watch, you knew it would be Casio rolling out a G-SHOCK for the occasion. Honestly, I wouldn’t trust anyone else with it.
