This Dry London Spirit by Lyre’s perfectly captures the essence of the classic gin. At the same time, the flavours are unique, distinctly Lyre’s and contemporary. You can expect firm flavours with juniper and citrus, earthy notes and pepperberry which adds warmth and delivers a generous, dry finish. While we’ve definitely enjoyed a tipple or two of our own, we aren’t the only fans of this non-alcoholic gin. When it comes to producing killer spirits, Aussie favourite Four Pillars is among our top exports, so when they dropped a devilishly delightfully non-alcoholic gin, our ears picked up. Bandwagon comes in two different variations, each a play on the brand’s most revered drops. The Bandwagon Dry is a classic formula sans the spirit, while our top pick has to be the Bandwagon Bloody. An alcohol-free version of Four Pillars’ iconic Bloody Shiraz Gin, the release is rich and fruity will an incredible finish. We’ve been dropping generous amounts of this one in a tall glass with tonic, because well, why not?

The new gin release has been made using distilled botanicals, just like the original Gordon’s London Dry Gin. You can still expect the bold, juniper-led character and flavours you’d get from Gordon’s. Whuile it might not have the depth of flavour that some of the more boutique options boast, it’s great value for money.

Sydney’s northern beaches distillery Seadrift sure knows how to make a refreshing gin, and we can’t go past their classic non-alcoholic gin. They combine fresh coastal and sea botanicals with flavours like coriander, kaffir lime leaves and golden sea kelp, which is then distilled in traditional copper pot stills to create an intense, refreshing drink. We reckon a glass of this served on ice, or with tonic water would go down a treat with some fresh seafood or solo, for arvo drinks by the beach.

Why You Should Trust Our List

When it comes to Man of Many’s list of the best non-alcoholic gins money can buy that expertise is key. While we’ve tasted every gin on this list, we’ve also turned to the wider public for their overall ratings. Our list takes into account three major perspectives to determine the overall rating. In addition to our own opinions, we take into account reviews via alcohol retailer Dan Murphys and the Australian non-alcoholic drinks retailers Sans Drinks and Craft Zero. We then collate the information together and measure the gins via overall flavour profile, reader ratings and commercial availability, meaning one-off special editions aren’t likely to top the list.

What is Non-Alcoholic Gin?

To get to really know non-alcoholic gin, it’s easiest to break it down into three parts.

How is Non-Alcoholic Gin Made?

The process of making non-alcoholic gin is very similar to alcoholic gin. Both rely on the same types of botanicals which are the fruity, floral, fragrant components that make up a gin such as juniper, (the one known for giving gin its ‘ginny’ taste) as well as fruit peels, spices and herbs.

While every manufacturer is different, some soak the botanicals in purified water until they take on that ginny flavour. Others begin the process with a small amount of neutral-flavoured alcoholic spirit (alcoholic), then add the botanical ingredients. This liquid is then heated over multiple rounds of distillation to withdraw the flavours of the non-alcoholic ingredients. Then, vapours rise, condense and are cooled and diluted and separated from the alcohol into the result – a non-alcoholic gin.

The process takes about six weeks, which is a bit longer than it would take to make its alcoholic counterpart.

Is Non-Alcoholic Gin Good for You?

It is safe to say, non-alcoholic gin is better for you as it contains no alcohol – which means it is not a depressant and won’t result in drunk food at 3 am, hangovers and all the other crap that comes with drinking lots of alcohol. Non-alcoholic gin, while some still contain sugars that can add up to some extra calories, is the way to go if you want a healthier option to regular alcoholic gin.

How Does Non-Alcoholic Gin Taste?

Just like normal gin, non-alcoholic gin varies in terms of taste, according to Ginned Magazine. In saying that, most non-alcoholic gins resemble the same flavour as traditional gin – think herbal, slightly citrus notes with spiced, and floral overtones. You can expect to taste the lack of alcohol, however, as it is near impossible to emulate that alcoholic burn – but you can expect all the other great flavours you find in gins.

Key Things to Consider for Non-Alcoholic Gins

When it comes to buying non-alcoholic gin, not all options are the same. It’s important to put a few key things into consideration if you want to get the best out of your G&T.

Base – While some producers will essentially create an alcoholic gin and then remove the spirit, others will start with a neutral base for their product. As a general rule, those made with juniper in the traditional gin-making process will feature a more rounded flavour, closer to the actual thing.
Flavouring – Like Four Pillars does with its Bloody Shiraz, gin producers love to mess around with flavours, and the same is true of the alcohol-free variation. You might find non-alcoholic gins with cucumber notes, strong juniper berries or any number of bizarre ingredients. Make sure you keep an eye on the flavouring.
Price – Just because a gin has no alcohol in it does not mean that it’s cheaper. More often than not, boutique gin producers will price their products above $50, so if you’re looking for value for money, stick to the tried and tested names like Gordon’s.
