The Glenlivet Explores ‘Tide-Pods’ as a New Way to Drink Whisky

It seems like something you would see in a Sci-Fi movie or at best on the International Space Station, but the Glenlivet Whisky Pods are actually real and they are available to the general public. Glenlivet gave the world of high-end drinking something to talk about with their announcement of the Glenlivet Capsule Collection. The collection consists of 23ml pods that you literally pop in your mouth to release the whisky inside.

“The Glenlivet, the original Speyside single malt, has partnered with sustainable packaging company Notpla and cocktail legend Alex Kratena to unveil a ‘Capsule Collection’ of glassless cocktails that break convention and redefine he way whisky is traditionally enjoyed,” explains the distiller. Kratena, who works for London bar Tayer, came up with three flavors for the capsules: citrus, wood, and spice. The citrus pods blend bergamot with grapefruit and almond, as well as a touch of pepper into The Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve. The same whisky is used for the wood blend, which features cedar, sandalwood, and nutty oloroso; and for the spice blend, which makes use of vetiver, dark walnut bitter, leather, and tobacco.

Notpla came up with the capsules, which are edible and made from seaweed. “When The Glenlivet approached us to create single malt whisky cocktails,” says Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez, co-founder and co-CEO of Notpla, “we knew it was going to be an exciting partnership. At Notpla we want to create original solutions for how to serve and consume drinks, and The Glenlivet is a brand that is looking to do just the same.” The pods hold 23ml of liquid and are fully biodegradable. Just pop one in your mouth—meaning literally, put it in your mouth and pop it by biting—and it will “provide the perfect flavor-explosion experience.”

The Glenlivet Whisky Pods

Reception of the idea has been mixed, but that didn’t stop The Glenlivet from exploring possibilities. Miriam Eceolaza, director of The Glenlivet, expressed, “As a brand that celebrates originality, we are always looking to break the conventions that have determined how single malt Scotch has historically been enjoyed. The Glenlivet Capsule Collection does exactly that, and we’re excited to see how people react when they try our glassless cocktails.” If you’re adventurous enough to try it, you may have missed your chance. The pods were served as a part of London Cocktail Week, which ended October 13.
