Carlex Design has already takenon the Mercedes X-Class and turned it into a six-wheeled thing of beauty. Now the European design team is expanding its repertoire to include Mercedes’ first-ever luxury pickup truck. Carlex’s Pickup Design studio has put together what they are calling the Mercedes-Benz X-Class EXY Monster X 6X6 Concept. The rest of the world is just calling it “Needs to be built now!”
The concept features a third axle that adds on the extra set of wheels. Should the Monster ever be built—it’s just a concept right now—Carlex promises that the body will be made of lightweight carbon fiber. The truck will be dressed out in black paint with yellow accents, which will make it pop almost as much as having six wheels does. The bed of the truck is completely yellow, but this isn’t just color. The paint in the bed is what the design company calls “protective, structural paint.” The vehicle was conceptualized as a track safety vehicle, and as such will come equipped with ceramic-carbon disc brakes as well as additional external lighting and two winches, one in the front and the other in the rear. There’s also a light bar on the roof. And lest you think this is just a track vehicle, massive fenders were added to cover the giant off-road tires.
As far as powertrains go, there aren’t too many details available. It could be outfitted in a stock turbodiesel 3.0-liter V6 from Mercedes-Benz. That engine would provide 258 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. There’s also little information on how that third axle will be controlled or even if a full 6X6 mode is possible. There’s also no word on if this beast will go into production, but rumor has it that Carlex Design is working on a one-off production—and where there’s one, there will hopefully be more.
