Infiniti Qs Inspiration Concept Bucks the Past

It takes some courage for Infiniti to come out with a new concept. Their last full-size four-door concept came out a dozen years ago—the Q45—and didn’t sell well. Infiniti tried again in 2009 with the Essence coupe, and then again in 2014 with the Q80 Inspiration. Now they’re bringing out a new concept, and it looks to change things for the automaker.

The Infiniti Qs Inspiration Concept features Infiniti’s VC-Turbo (Variable Compression) powertrain. The powertrain is designed to adjust internally so that the driver has maximum responsiveness, while still maintaining maximum fuel economy. The four-cylinder engine has a different proportion compared to other engines in the class, a change that allowed for a shorter hood but a longer body.

The Inspiration also features ProPILOT, the next generation of autonomous driving, which promises “the freedom to release control and take it back so you can focus on the best parts of driving.”

The interior received a lot of attention for the concept. “The Q inspiration interior is reduced to a minimalist expression of wellbeing and comfort,” explains Karim Habib, Infiniti’s executive design director. Habib continues, explaining that the goal was to create a warm and modern feel that would allow for greater connectivity that didn’t compromise the driving experience. The longer body allows for a more spacious, less-crowded feel in the cabin.

The Infiniti concepts may have been plagued in the past with poor numbers, but the new Qs show a lot of promise for the future.
