While modern luxury SUVs like the BMW XM are pushing the extreme ends of in-car technology with gesture-controlled 3D parking, the humble Nissan Patrol’s biggest claim to technology fame was its automatic climate control, a system that was first introduced in 1964.
However, that’s all about to change because they’ve teamed up with Australian automotive supplier Directed Technologies to add a new 10.1-inch high-definition central touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto to their updated MY24 Nissan Patrol models (from AU$87,900 plus on-road costs). And don’t you worry, they still have the 5.6-litre V8 petrol engine with 298kW under the bonnet.

The upgrade to the infotainment screen arrives alongside a host of other handy features including two USB ports (A and C) and a 15w wireless charging pocket to keep your phone’s battery charged while screen-mirroring. There’s also DAB+ Radio, six speakers (optional Infinity Premium Audio on Ti-L models), an intelligent rearview mirror, and a first-row centre console cool box like the Toyota LandCruiser 300.
Keeping the offroad fans front and centre, the brand has added iGO Street Navigation and a 1-month free subscription to Hema 4×4 Navigation as part of the deal. We used this system on a trip to the Simpson Desert and it was an absolute game-changer, adding plenty of peace of mind to our trip when mobile phone reception dropped out and in-depth information became unavailable on Google Maps offline.
We’d still like to see future iterations of the Nissan Patrol take some design queues from the UAE market model or the all-electric Nissan Ariya. However, this update will at least keep the SUV at a level peg with the incoming all-new Toyota Prado which is destined to make up the vast majority of sales. It houses a class-leading interior with a 12.3-inch infotainment screen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
Still, the Nissan Patrol has something that neither Toyota nor any other competitor in the market can offer short of a Dodge Ram 1500. There’s a stonking great 5.6-litre V8 petrol engine with 298kW under the bonnet. Not only does it sound great on the ‘Warrior’ variant with obligatory side pipes, but it has plenty of support in the aftermarket and has proven itself as a champion of reliability and longevity.
Pricing for the updated MY24 Nissan Patrol will start at $87,900 plus on-road costs for the entry Ti model grade, extending to $100,600 plus on-road costs for the Ti-L variant that adds driver’s seat memory, a power-operated tailgate, sunroof, heated and cooled front seats, Infinity Premium Audio, and more.
