The Best Notes That Last Past Lunch

Finding a spring fragrance that lasts longer than a few hours on your skin comes down to chemistry, with natural citrus oils typically fading faster. 

“Natural citrus oils are highly volatile and fade within about an hour,” explains Jancauskas. “Hedione is one of the few materials that actually prolongs and amplifies the citrus itself; more often, longevity comes from unrelated materials taking over once the citrus is gone.”

So, what should you look for if you want a long-lasting perfume?

 “Materials like ambroxan, musks, oakmoss, or vetiver take over once the citrus is gone, so the fragrance still feels alive rather than smelling of citrus for hours,” Jancauskas notes. 

EDP vs. EDT: Which is Better in Warmer Weather?

“As a rough baseline, more concentrate does mean more raw perfume oil and more overall presence,” says Jancauskas. “But whether that’s a good thing at 35°C depends entirely on your preferences and what that oil actually is.”

In high heat, your body temperature acts like an amplifier, making fragrance project harder and evaporate faster. An EDP packed with amber, vanilla, or heavy woods will turn dense the second you step into the sun. 

On the flip side, an EDP built around green tea, dry vetiver, or sea salt gives you extra longevity without being overpowering. 

Signature Scent or Fragrance Wardrobe?

“Without going overboard, it’s nice to have a small rotation of two to three fragrances to suit mood, climate, or occasion,” Jancauskas advises. “Keeps everything fresh and interesting. The ‘one signature scent’ guy is sometimes the one who’s become so used to his own fragrance that he over-sprays without realising.”

When your brain gets used to smelling the same scent every morning, you tune it out, which leads to taking a fourth spray when two was plenty. Building a small seasonal rotation (like a sharp citrus for work, a salty aquatic for weekends, and a dry herbal scent for evenings) keeps your nose sharp and stops you from overdoing it.

The Best Way to Test Fragrance

Testing a fragrance on paper strips at the store counter doesn’t tell you much because paper blotters don’t sweat, they don’t have natural oils, and they don’t sit in summer humidity.

“The best test is wearing it on skin through the course of a normal day, or even better, over several days,” says Jancauskas. “Skin chemistry changes how a scent develops, and a blotter can’t replicate that. We sell 1ml samples of all our fragrances for this reason. It’s the best way to avoid an expensive bottle from gathering dust.”
