Dior homme cologne eau de toilette by dior
DIOR Homme Cologne Eau de Toilette by DIOR | Image: Supplied

1. DIOR Homme Cologne Eau de Toilette by DIOR

Price: from AUD$145

  • Pros: Well-priced with a fresh citrus smell to die for, there’s a reason DIOR Homme Cologne is regarded as one of the greatest scents money can buy.
  • Cons: Not the best choice for formal occasions. Longevity could be better, and we found a maximum of just 4 hours of projection on the skin. It’s not bad for a fresh scent, but it’s not great either.

Top notes: Calabrian bergamot
Middle notes: Grapefruit blossom
Base notes: White Musk

Not only is DIOR Homme Cologne one of the best citrus scents for men, but it’s also regarded as one of the best fragrances ever. With top notes of Calabrian bergamot and a grapefruit blossom heart, it’s the cologne equivalent of sticking your nose into a bottle of freshly squeezed lemonade. Still, it remains perfectly balanced by a white musk base that rounds it out with a decent longevity of 4 hours on skin and more on clothes. Fresh and clean, it’s perfect for wearing around the house, to the office, and on weekends with mates. However, it’s not the best option for formal wear, but a few citrus fragrances for men are.

Myslf eau de parfum by yves saint laurent
MYSLF Eau de Parfum by Yves Saint Laurent | Image: Supplied

2. MYSLF Eau de Parfum by Yves Saint Laurent

Price: from AUD$226

  • Pros: This addictive scent could become your new signature. It’s good all around, with a fresh and floral twist that’s perfect for spring and summer.
  • Cons: Blossom heart and soapy dry-down are not for everyone. Don’t expect lemon and lime!

Top notes: Calabrian bergamot and Bergamot
Middle notes: Tunisian Orange Blossom
Base notes: Ambrofix and Patchouli

MYSLF Eau de Parfum is another staple citrus cologne that all men should try at least once in their lives. We think you’ll love the bergamot top notes, but this scent starts to thrive in the middle, with the notes of Tunisian orange blossom that come through strongly, balanced by a patchouli and ambrofix base. Seriously, we can’t get enough of how this smells, and it makes up for the average longevity, projection, and overall performance. Some critics online noted that the dry-down brings a heavy amount of vanilla and floral notes, but we didn’t find this during our testing. It was a balanced amount and far from overly heavy. Wear this around town, to the office, and on first dates. It’s sure to impress!

Pacific chill by louis vuitton 1
Pacific Chill by Louis Vuitton | Image: Supplied

3. Pacific Chill by Louis Vuitton

Price: from AUD$550

  • Pros: Cucumber! It’s like a mojito in a bottle, mint, citrus, and freshness galore.
  • Cons: Very expensive, not for those without deep pockets.

Top notes: Citron, Orange, Mint, Lemon, Black Currant and Coriander
Middle notes: Apricot, Basil, Carrot Seeds and May Rose
Base notes: Fig, Dates and Ambrette

Pacific Chill by Louis Vuitton is the fragrance equivalent of a mojito cocktail in a bottle with plenty of coriander, lemon, mint, citron, orange, and an overarching cucumber scent that you won’t find listed on the notes. Performance is great and amongst the longest-lasting fresh fragrances for men that we’ve tested. Our tests show that you should expect around 5-6 hours of projection on the skin and a little more on clothes. Sillage is tight and meaningful, which means you could wear this around the office, date nights, and cocktail evenings in the warmer months. If you’re looking for a citrus scent to invest in, put this on your shortlist.

Perseus by parfums de marly
Perseus by Parfums de Marly | Image: Ben McKimm / Man of Many

4. Perseus by Parfums de Marly

Price: from AUD$498

  • Pros: Grapefruit and black current are not typical of citrus scents, but they’re more than welcome here in this delicious fresh scent.
  • Cons: Quite a unique scent, not to everyone’s tastes.

Top notes: Grapefruit, Bergamot and Black Currant
Middle notes: Vetiver, Green Mandarin and Geranium
Base notes: Dry Wood, Ambergris, Cashmere Wood, Balsam Fir, Cedar and Tonka Bean

Most people think of lemon and lime when discussing citrus scents for men. However, Perseus by Parfums de Marly turns this idea on its head with a face full of grapefruit, bergamot, and black current on the top notes before they’re matched by green mandarin and vetiver, which makes it a very memorable scent for passersby. Performance is good for a fresh scent, but don’t expect it to last as long as other warmer Parfums de Marly scents. We extracted around 4-6 hours of projection from our test bottle, which we’ve been wearing for more than 6 months now. This scent is unique, so we recommend trying it in-store before paying full price for a bottle. It could work for daily wear, but there are probably better, more neutral options, such as DIOR Homme Cologne.

Bohemian lime by goldfield banks
Bohemian Lime by Goldfield & Banks | Image: Supplied

5. Bohemian Lime by Goldfield & Banks

Price: from AUD$239

  • Pros: Fresh bitter lime, smells like summer in Australia.
  • Cons: Not the best choice for formal settings and professional office wear.

Top notes: Australian finger lime and coriander
Base notes: Vetiver, cedar wood and sandalwood

Goldfield & Banks is an Australian fragrance brand. They say that Bohemian Lime is a carefree fragrance and an ode to Byron Bay. So we went into our test expecting the perfect scent for summer, and it delivered. It’s niche, unique, and full of colour, with finger lime and coriander on the opening before it dries down to a woody base. It is fresh, zingy, and a little bitter, making it perfect for daily wear during the warmer months in Australia. Longevity is solid, and like most fresh scents, you should expect 4-6 hours of longevity on the skin and slightly more on clothes. Wear it daily if you work in an informal setting or keep it for linen outfits and Sunday sessions.

Acqua di gio profondo by giorgio armani 1
Acqua di Giò Profondo by Giorgio Armani | Image: Supplied

6. Acqua di Giò Profondo Eau De Parfum by Giorgio Armani

Price: from AUD$120

  • Pros: Fresh marine scent with a hint of aromatics, perfect for sitting seaside on a warm day.
  • Cons: More fresh than citrus. It is quite alcoholic on the first spray but fixes itself on drying down.

CypressTop notes: Sea Notes, Aquozone, Bergamot and Green Mandarin
Middle notes: Rosemary, Lavender, Cypress and Mastic or Lentisque
Base notes: Mineral notes, Musk, Patchouli and Amber

We’ve chosen as many different fresh citrus scents as possible for this article, and Acqua di Giò Profondo leans into the marine side of things with notes of Aquozone, Bergamot and Green Mandarin balanced by Cypress, Patchouli, and Amber on the base. It’s certainly fresher than it is citrus, but that’s exactly what you expect from a marine-driven scent like this. Performance-wise, you’ll find 4-6 hours of projection on the skin, which makes it average compared to other fragrances in this article. Sillage is not particularly good, but maybe that’s preferred when sweating it out at the beach on a hot summer day. We recommend wearing this one daily during the warmer months as it’s a well-balanced, neutral scent that would work for everyone. This is a safe blind buy!

Colonia futura by acqua di parma
Colonia Futura by Acqua di Parma | Image: Supplied

7. Colonia Futura by Acqua di Parma

Price: from AUD$304

  • Pros: Great niche citrus scent for men that’s bitter, masculine, and zesty.
  • Cons: Not for younger men. It’s not sweet, and they’ll likely find it too bitter.

Top notes: Lemon, Bergamot, Grapefruit and Pink Pepper
Middle notes: Lavender and Sage
Base notes: Vetiver

Where Acqua di Giò Profondo leans aquatic, Colonia Futura is all citrus, with a strong opening of grapefruit and lemon and a bitterness that makes it a standout scent. It’s a little old-school compared to some citrus scents on our list, but this makes it a good option for wearing daily as it leans more professional and mature. Performance is marked at 4-6 hours on the skin and slightly more on clothes, making it average for a men’s citrus cologne.

Timeless by clive christian 1
Timeless by Clive Christian | Image: Supplied

8. Timeless by Clive Christian

Price: from AUD$715

  • Pros: Unique without being strange, comfortable to wear without being boring, it’s the king of citrus scents for a reason. Very long-lasting.
  • Cons: Ridiculously expensive, but you pay to play! The old-school feel is not for everyone.

Top notes: Lime, Bitter Orange and Ginger
Middle notes: Mint, Lavender, Coriander and Nutmeg
Base notes: Vetiver, Musk, Amber and Leather

Timeless by Clive Christian is just that, timeless. It seems to last forever on the skin, and while Ani X by Nishane edges it for overall longevity, it’s not far behind. The scent profile leans a little old-school because of the bitter orange and ginger notes that are prevalent on the first spray. However, they fade a little after the scent dries down on your skin. Our tests show that this lasts more than 10 hours on the skin with projection beyond 6 hours. It’s perfect for wearing to the office and works in formal settings like dinner parties, cocktail events, and awards ceremonies.

Neroli sauvage by creed 1
Neroli Sauvage by Creed | Image: Supplied

9. Neroli Sauvage by Creed

Price: from AUD$349

  • Pros: Pink lemonade smell that’s perfect for warmer days.
  • Cons: Longevity is not good, especially for the high price point.

Top notes: Bergamot and Grapefruit
Middle notes: Verbena and Neroli
Base notes: Ambergris

We rarely start by talking about the middle notes of a fragrance, but the Neroli is so overwhelming with Neroli Sauvage that they put it in the name! This note adds overwhelming freshness to an otherwise neutral scent that is perfect for wearing daily. The citrus notes are pulled out with a combination of bergamot and grapefruit on the first spray, but they dry down to create a good balance between fresh citrus and a natural verbena. Longevity is good at 4-6 hours on the skin, but don’t expect it to project for much longer than 4 hours. We’ve never found Creed scents to be particularly long-lasting and it seems that theme is going to continue here.

Ani x by nishane 1
Ani X by Nishane | Image: Supplied

10. Ani X by Nishane

Price: from AUD$389

  • Pros: The longest-lasting citrus scent for men we’ve ever tested.
  • Cons: Quite expensive, but justified because of its performance and smell.

Top notes: Lemon, Bergamot, Melon, Ginger, Cardamom, Water Notes and Pink Pepper
Middle notes: Green Apple, Patchouli, Black Currant, Lavender, Sage and Rose
Base notes: Vanilla, Sandalwood, Cashmere Wood, Ambergris, White Musk and Cedar

Nishane took one of their top-rated fragrances and added a whack of citrus, fruit, and rose that brings this into the conversation for one of the best citrus scents for men. It’s unquestionably the longest-lasting citrus cologne we’ve ever tested, and while we’re writing this we can still smell the scent on our testing strip after two days! It’s hard to say exactly how long it lasts on the skin because that would involve not showering, but it’s more than 10 hours of longevity, which is pretty much unheard of for fresh scents. You’ll love the versatility of the scent, with a fresh and sporty feel that reminds us of some of our favourite body washes. Orange, lemon, black currant, it’s outstanding.
