Omega’s Speedmaster 38 MM Range Receives a Moonwatch-Worthy Refresh

Omega’s Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional is one of the most iconic watches ever made. Most famous for its status as the first watch worn on the moon, it’s an instantly recognisable symbol of ingenuity, courage, and the ambition that fuelled mankind to reach beyond Earth’s atmosphere.

It’s also a watch that, in its most familiar incarnations, sticks pretty firmly to the well-established 42-mm sizing. Authentic as that might be, it makes this horological icon less accessible to those of us with a wrist on the slimmer side. There have been smaller versions, of course, but these have often tweaked the Speedmaster’s visual language to the point where they no longer scratch the very particular Apollo-inspired itch so effectively targeted by their larger counterparts.

With that in mind, it’s always exciting when Omega resigns itself to giving smaller-wristed enthusiasts a taste of that old-school Speedmaster magic. Today is just such a day, with the Swiss watchmaker refreshing its Speedmaster 38 range with seven new releases. These may not include “Moonswatch Professional” in their name (or upon their dial), but aesthetically the new releases (well, the black one in particular) veer closer to that classic Moonwatch look than previous 38-mm incarnations. In doing so, they allow the wrist-challenged among us to imagine we, too, could find ourselves moon-bound. With prices starting from AUD$10,325, they’re also a smidge cheaper than the larger models. Let’s take a closer look.

Does It Come In Black?

Rather than actually residing under the Moonwatch banner, Omega instead describes these releases as “Moonwatch-inspired”. It would be safe to describe them as closer in aesthetic to the original Speedmaster (in part thanks to the introduction of round subdials to the line), and as mentioned, this is most applicable to the black model.

Of the seven pieces unveiled, the black option not only offers the most instant sense of familiarity, but it’s also the most faithful to the original due to it being the only reference without a date display. As Omega puts it, “it is the purest expression of the Moonwatch spirit in a more compact size.”

The watch features white-varnished hands with white Super-LumiNova on the hour, minute and chronograph seconds hands, as well as a polished bezel with a black aluminium ring that includes the signature tachymeter scale. Further, the reverse of the steel case is stamped with a Seahorse medallion behind which sits the Omega 3332 calibre.

This new movement makes its debut in this no-date Speedmaster 38 mm, squeezing classic Moonwatch functionality into the 38-mm dimensions. In order to do so, Omega has expanded the thickness of the case to a not inconsiderable 14.75 mm. This begs the question, what’s more important? Width or height? As your typical 42-mm Moonswatch Professional sits somewhere between 13.0 and 13.6 mm thick. Something to ponder.

A Speedy For Any Occasion

The dimensions for the remaining six references match the black model, although these do boast a date window and are powered by the Omega 3330 movement. They also serve up a wide range of looks.

First is a further pair of straight-up stainless-steel models, one with a white varnished and lacquered dial and blue ceramic bezel ring and the other with a silvery PVD-coated dial and a warm grey aluminium ring. There’s also a pair of bi-colour models that combine stainless steel with Moonshine Gold or Sedna Gold. And finally, we have two models presented with 52 diamonds on the bezel.

Omega’s new Speedmaster 38 models offer a broad range of looks for those who simply can’t handle the 42-mm diameter of more traditional models. While the black model is hands-down the winner as far as I’m concerned (it’s also the most affordable), not everyone is as enthralled by the space connection as I am. Then again, I can’t imagine what else would compel you to hand over the $10k+ required to secure a Speedmaster.
