Apple iPhone 18 Pro Review: First Impressions, 5 Days in Hand

With the news of the iPhone Duo, the atmosphere on the ground at Apple Park for the iPhone 18 Pro launch felt distinctly different from previous years. We’re no longer in an era where a slight camera bump and a new colour justify an upgrade for the Pro model, but that’s not what the Cupertino-based company has delivered here with the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max (as tested). The past seven days have seen me pushing the new smartphone through its paces to see if the hardware lives up to the promises made by CEO John Ternus in the Keynote.

That means I’ve spent most of my time testing the new camera features, including the variable aperture, the A20 Pro chip, and the upgraded vapour-chamber thermal architecture around it. With the release of last year’s devices, Apple abandoned titanium in favour of a heat-forged 7000 series aluminium unibody, which is 20 times more thermally conductive than the iPhone 16 Pro. Paired with this new vapour chamber that features three times the surface area of its predecessor, the device achieves up to a 40 per cent gain in sustained performance. When you compare this thermal reality to competitors like the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra, it becomes clear that Apple is finally prioritising sustained heavy workloads over short-burst benchmarks.

However, the reality is that beyond the increase in battery life, the biggest upgrades to the iPhone 18 Pro series won’t be felt by most consumers this year. Professional creators will feel the difference first, letting the new 48MP Fusion Main camera and its mechanical variable aperture do the heavy lifting during extended shoots. Without heat restrictions throttling performance, we are about to see just how much production value can actually be squeezed out of a smartphone. Let’s get into the review!

The 30-Second iPhone 18 Pro Verdict

It looks the same on the surface, besides the fancy new colours, but the iPhone 18 Pro delivers a technical upgrade by pairing Apple’s first mechanical variable aperture with a serious thermal architecture redesigned from the ground up.

The entry pricing starts at AUD$2,099 for the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro and AUD$2,299 for the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro Max, pushing the base Pro tier past the AUD$2,000 mark with an entry price increase (+AUD$100) across both models compared to the previous generation.

Local buyers in Australia have been able to secure the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max since Saturday, 12 September at 10 p.m. AEST. The official in-store release and general retail availability will commence six days later on Friday, 18 September.

Design, Display, Ergonomics, and Thermal Upgrades

I’ll concede that it’s indeed the same basic design as the previous generation, but upon closer inspection, there are some little refinements.

Lets start with the colours as the device is available in four finishes: Black (the darkest black ever on a Pro model), Silver (a refined option with colour-matched back glass), Glacier (a lighter blue shade that I have here), and Burgundy (a sophisticated tone marking a first for any Apple device). You can pair these with a range of cases in several finishes, but I think the real hack is to pick an adjacent colour case and one of the new wrist straps. I’ll also quickly note that the new and improved clear case now has bottom loopholes for wrist straps and crossbody straps.

Technically speaking, the heat-forged 7000-series aluminium unibody carries over its lightweight feel and thermal conductivity advantages over older titanium models like the iPhone 16 Pro. However, the 18 Pro introduces key internal material upgrades to unlock a further 40 per cent gain in sustained performance over the iPhone 17 Pro. We had a chance to look inside the chassis and see a demonstration of the redesigned vapour chamber, now directly embedded into the central structural plane, featuring three times the surface area of the previous generation. This is paired with an industry-first Nanotwin copper display plate and more thermally conductive graphite to pull heat away from the screen.

Durability has also copped an upgrade for daily use. The front panel features Ceramic Shield 2, engineered to offer three times the scratch resistance of the iPhone 15 Pro, while the Ceramic Shield rear glass provides four times greater crack resistance.

The Super Retina XDR displays measure the same 6.3 inches (6.27 inches diagonal rectangular) for the Pro and 6.9 inches (6.86 inches diagonal rectangular) for the Pro Max. Like the previous generation, they push a whopping 3,000-nit peak outdoor brightness and scale down to 1-nit minimum brightness for the Always-On Display.

Compared to the other main flagship smartphone on the market, the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra, the iPhone 18 Pro has an advantage in daytime legibility. Samsung’s 6.9-inch S26 Ultra peaks at 2,600 nits and has recently faced criticism for its hardware-based Privacy Display, which slightly dims real-world output. Furthermore, Apple has finally countered Samsung’s long-standing lead in glare reduction. The new surface treatment on the iPhone 18 Pro cuts screen reflections by 35 per cent and delivers twice the outdoor contrast compared to the iPhone 16 Pro, effectively matching the highly praised anti-reflective glass of its main rival.

Colour rendition is now managed via new Apple Colour Matching Functions (CMF) to ensure absolute professional consistency across devices.

Last but not least is the smaller, re-engineered Dynamic Island. By placing the Infrared camera directly behind the active display pixels without optical distortion, the cutout area is around 25 per cent smaller. This extra screen space lets the Dynamic Island monitor up to three Live Activities simultaneously, letting you track flight updates, rideshares, and timer countdowns at a glance.

48MP Pro Fusion Camera System with Variable Aperture

The main reason you’d buy an iPhone 18 Pro is the upgraded 48MP Fusion Main camera that introduces a true mechanical variable aperture to the iPhone for the first time.

This new lens mechanism is seriously impressive, featuring six uniquely shaped, laser-cut blades driven by a precision rotor. It takes a second to switch between the four distinct physical apertures: f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4.0. These variable aperture works across all primary focal lengths, including 1x, 1.2x, 1.5x, and the optical-quality 2x telephoto crop. However, not the 0.5x or the 4x zoom.

When you run the camera in automatic mode, the iPhone moves the blades based on lighting, subject distance, motion, and even text on documents. It will automatically drop down to f/1.48 in low-light environments, gathering roughly 50 per cent more light than standard lenses. I also noticed that it speeds up Night mode exposures and maintains more crisp detail. Conversely, when capturing group portraits, the camera steps down to f/2.8 or f/4.0 to expand the mid-scene depth of field.

My favourite upgrade is to the Camera app, which now features customisable Pro controls in a new drawer. You can pin manual controls for aperture, shutter speed, white balance, photographic styles, and a live exposure histogram directly to the top of the screen. Selecting f/4.0 manually while pointing at direct streetlights produces a cool stardust flare effect created naturally by the physical shape of the six internal blades.

Like the previous generation, the rear system provides the equivalent of eight Pro lenses in your pocket (0.5x, 1x, 1.2x, 1.5x, 2x, 4x, 8x, and macro). This is driven by an all-48MP array, featuring a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide lens and a 48MP Fusion Telephoto lens that utilises a tetraprism design for 4x and 8x optical-quality zoom. The entire Photonic Engine pipeline has received a computational upgrade, processing 48MP frames throughout the entire workflow to deliver pristine 24MP default images alongside 48MP HEIF and RAW files.

But beyond these raw optical adjustments, the software pipeline introduces significant creative control. Photographic Styles 3 expands past simple tone and colour adjustments by adding dedicated texture and grain controls. This allows you to dial back aggressive digital skin sharpening, fine-tune highlight roll-off, and add organic film grain while preserving original shadow structures. Complementing this control is Smart Focus Tracking, which relies on on-device machine learning and advanced image segmentation. The system tracks subjects across complex depth planes during both photo and video capture, retaining a solid focus lock even if your subject temporarily steps out of the frame and returns.

For journalists, documentary makers, and visual purists, the inclusion of Apple Reference Image is a crucial opt-in security upgrade. At the moment of exposure, the 48MP sensor performs a pixel-by-pixel cryptographic signing, embedding a unique data packet alongside the standard HEIF file. When you open the file in the Photos app, Private Cloud Compute processes the reference data to generate an unalterable verification layer. Toggling between the standard image and the reference file acts as a digital negative, allowing you to prove exactly what was in the scene at the moment of capture without relying on third-party verification tools.

18MP Centre Stage Front Camera

The iPhone 18 Pro carries over the same 18MP Centre Stage front camera from last year. With autofocus and a faster aperture than older models, the physical sensor is almost twice the size of the one found on the iPhone 16 Pro and will be a noticeable upgrade for anyone moving from an iPhone 16 Pro or earlier.

It uses a native 1:1 square aspect ratio, which means high-resolution image capture and video stabilisation in both portrait and landscape orientations without cropping away sensor area.

Software capabilities take advantage of this sensor, including Centre Stage, to automatically detect people stepping into the shot and expand the optical field of view, adjust rotation settings, and auto-zoom to ensure everyone fits neatly in frame. Content creators will also benefit from the returning Dual Capture feature, which records synchronised video feeds from both the front Centre Stage camera and rear cameras simultaneously at up to 4K Dolby Vision 30 fps.

Video calls on FaceTime and third-party apps support Centre Stage to keep your face perfectly positioned in the frame, while standard selfie video recording inherits ultra-stabilised Action mode technology.

Pro Video Versatility, Audio Mix, and Workflow Integrations

While previous Pro models supported 4K 120fps Dolby Vision and external drive recording, the iPhone 18 Pro introduces new formats and workflow tools tailored for professionals.

Cinematic mode effects no longer require selecting a dedicated shooting mode, and I’m here for it. The camera now captures spatial depth information by default during standard video recording up to 60 fps. You can then jump into post-production in the Photos app and retroactively apply focus pulls and aperture blur, or slow the clip down to half-speed.

You’ll also notice some benefits in low-light videography, where the default 1080P 30 fps mode benefits from a new Auto FPS algorithm that combines light across multiple frames to suppress noise and recover natural detail.

High-end production still benefits from ProRes RAW recording in compatible third-party apps like Final Cut Camera and Blackmagic Camera, and it still supports Log encoding with the Academy Colour Encoding System (ACES) global standard. New for the iPhone 18 Pro is hardware Genlock synchronisation support via the Blackmagic Camera ProDock and dedicated Apple APIs, enabling multi-camera bullet-time arrays and frame-accurate live broadcast switching.

With a USB cable (such as the Pro Thunderbolt 4 cable) at 10 Gb/s speeds, you can still record ProRes, ProRes RAW, and Log up to 4K 120 fps directly to an external SSD. The drive requires at least 220 Mb/s write speeds and draws up to 4.5W of external power. This connectivity also enables instant Apple ProRAW offloads directly to a Mac via Capture One, as well as 4K 60 HDR Video Out via DisplayPort or the USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter.

New for the iPhone 18 Pro series is 4K Time-lapse in Dolby Vision capability, including an adaptive mode that intelligently slows frame capture during subtle subject movement and accelerates through static scenes.

Last but not least, the four studio-quality microphones and advanced wind noise reduction introduced on the iPhone 16 Pro have copped an upgrade that can now independently isolate vocals and music, separating both from background noise for post-recording balance adjustments in Audio Mix.

A20 Pro Silicon, C2 Cellular, and N1 Wireless

The A20 Pro is fabricated on an industry-leading 2-nanometer process. It features a new 6-core CPU that delivers up to 50 per cent faster processing over older models, alongside a GPU with an additional core that runs 2.1x faster than older generations like the iPhone 16 Pro. Dual 16-core Neural Engines run twice the performance for on-device AI. Memory bandwidth has also expanded by 50 per cent. To optimise thermal dissipation, Apple transitioned to an M-series-inspired packaging design, placing the System-on-Chip (SoC) side-by-side with memory rather than stacking them.

Underneath the thermal chassis, the brand has overhauled the cellular and local wireless architecture with dedicated custom silicon. The headline addition is the Apple C2 modem, which uses AI algorithms to stabilise connection quality while delivering faster upload speeds. It also consumes 15 per cent less energy than the outgoing C1X architecture, which helps with battery life.

Local wireless connectivity continues to be managed by the dedicated Apple N1 chip that maintains full support for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread integration.

Battery Life and Fast Charging Performance

It’s only been a short few days of tests, so I haven’t had the chance to perform a full battery drain test. However, with 2nm silicon efficiencies, new internal battery designs, and expanded physical volume, battery life on both Pro models has set new benchmarks.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max delivers up to 43 hours of continuous video playback, or up to 29 hours under Apple’s active daily usage profile. Meanwhile, the standard iPhone 18 Pro offers up to 34 hours of video playback and 23 hours of active daily use. Upgrading from an iPhone 16 Pro yields 18 additional hours of potential video playback, while upgrading from an iPhone 15 Pro yields 11 additional hours.

Wired charging speeds have been upgraded significantly. When paired with a 35W or higher USB-C power adapter with Adjustable Voltage Supply (AVS), such as Apple’s 40W Dynamic Power Adapter (60W Max), both models charge from zero to 50 per cent in approximately 15 minutes. A quick five-minute wired charge on the Pro Max provides up to seven hours of video playback. MagSafe wireless charging speeds remain, carrying over the 25W capacity introduced on the iPhone 16 Pro, allowing a 50 per cent charge in 30 minutes with a 35W or higher adapter.

iOS 27, Siri AI, and Safety Features

Running on iOS 27, the headline software update for the iPhone 18 Pro series is Siri AI. It feels like I need to write a full breakdown of what this is, but for this review, I’ll position it as an expanded generation of Apple Intelligence. Siri AI leverages personal context, cross-app actions, onscreen awareness, and broad world knowledge to perform complex requests across Messages, Mail, Photos, and Safari.

It’s still too early to give a full verdict on Siri AI, as server-side Apple Intelligence features, including Siri AI, Intelligent Photo Editing Tools, Image Playground, and AFM 3 Cloud models in Shortcuts, are subject to daily usage limits dictated by complexity and system demand, and I haven’t had a chance to test this out in detail just yet. The brand also notes that expanded access to these features will require a fee in the future, so I will go through a full deep-dive into this at a later date. Furthermore, Siri AI is launching initially in beta and only in English, with full availability entirely excluded from the EU at launch due to regulatory frameworks.

The device still supports Crash Detection to automatically call emergency services and text emergency contacts in the Health app. Satellite safety features remain included for free for two years post-activation. These include Roadside Assistance via satellite, Find My location sharing, Emergency SOS, and Messages via satellite, which supports end-to-end encrypted iMessage and SMS with emoji and Tapbacks.

Man of Many’s Verdict on the iPhone 18 Pro

Beyond the leap in battery life, it still feels like the most transformative upgrades on the iPhone 18 Pro will not be immediately obvious to casual users until Siri AI rolls out.

Professional creators will feel the difference first, letting the new 48MP Fusion Main camera and its mechanical variable aperture do the heavy lifting during shoots. However, this is a niche, professional addition that adds some low-light performance for casual users but doesn’t otherwise change how most users operate their iPhone.

Ultimately, now that the iPhone Pro is unshackled from thermal limits, it can push mobile production value into a new realm. That’s always been the goal of the Pro series, and it’s delivered once again.
