Google Pixel Fold: Tech Giant Joins the Foldable Phone Frenzy

Foldable fever has taken over the smartphone industry and even Google is hopping on the bandwagon. The tech giant is giving its Pixel series a foldable treatment with its first-ever foldable phone, the Pixel Fold. The new addition is slated to launch during the forthcoming Google I/O 2023 event on May 10, however, to hype the impending launch, Google released a brief teaser that gives us a peek at the device’s display, design and cameras.

Taking a page out of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy Z Fold devices, the Pixel Fold will feature a fully fledged outer display that will unfold into a larger tablet-like screen, albeit with a few major differences. Interestingly, there’s no apparent wrinkle when the device is unfolded, which seems to hint that the Pixel Fold might boast a near-creaseless display.

Foldable tech is getting more mature with each iteration and the companies are heavily focusing on making the obtrusive-looking crease disappear, so it could well be possible that Google has somehow managed to conceal it. However, we will have to check that out for ourselves when the device officially comes out.

Based on the images shown, the Pixel Fold is set to have a shorter but wider outer display that could make browsing or texting easier. The overall design looks sleek, stylish and classy, while the outer chassis appears rather premium and sturdy.

Google has slightly modified the rear camera setup on the Pixel Fold, which looks reminiscent of the Pixel 7 Pro but doesn’t extend all the way or protrude that much. The device is set to feature two selfie cameras, one inside and one on the outer panel.

The rear camera bar will also boast a periscope zoom camera and might support features like Super Res Zoom and Macro Focus. While no specs have been shared, CNBC revealed last month that the Pixel Fold would have a 5.8-inch outer screen that unfolds into a 7.6-inch tablet.

Under the hood, the device will have a Google Tensor G2 processor and will be available in 256GB and 512GB storage configurations. Weighing just about 10 ounces (or 283 grams), the Pixel Fold is said to have “the most durable hinge on a foldable,” along with an exorbitant price tag of over USD $1,700 (AUD $2,500). More details including the Pixel Fold’s official release date will be shared on May 10. In the meantime, you can sign up on the Google Store page to know more about the device.
