While relatively big in size, the 2020 Buick Enclave still manages to make the little things count. That was our experience when driving one around Portland, where we took advantage of the luxury crossover and its leather-clad steering wheel, prime safety features, brilliant infotainment system, high-definition rear camera, foldable seats, and spacious interior. Pair all that with a downright smooth suspension and this luxurious mid-size SUV leaves precious little to be desired.
Taking the Enclave’s exterior up a notch in the style department is a new Sport Touring package. Presented in a sleek and confident monochromatic colour, the package features a new Sport grille, body-colour surround, and 20″ machined aluminium wheels with contrasting Satin Graphite pockets. Exclusive to the Enclave Essence trim level, the athletic touch-up imparts with a sense of pure agility and exterior flow.
Special packages and other variables aside, the 2020 Buick Enclave delivers plenty of quality mainstays from one edition to the next. That includes a new updated infotainment system with 8″ display, which couldn’t have been easier to navigate. We were also blown away by the HD Rear Vision camera and its downright impeccable resolution. Rarely had a camera view been as clear and legible as it was inside this vehicle. Consider us spoiled from here on out.
Powering every 2020 Buick Enclave is a 3.6 litre V-6 engine, which generates 310 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. The SUV also features both front and all-wheel drive, along with a nine-speed automatic transmission. When accelerating, we could occasionally feel the weight and mass of the vehicle as it gained momentum. Once cruising, however, the Enclave seemed to defy its own size, to the point that 35 mph and 55 mph were practically indistinguishable from one another. That held true on highway roads and back roads alike, as we travelled well outside the city to some of its smaller, neighbouring towns.
Inside, the 2020 Buick Enclave offers commodiousness, comfort, and convenience. Between its two back rows and trunk, there’s room for the average family with storage space to spare. Meanwhile, folding the passenger seats in the first row was as simple as pulling down on a lever. It was a system so quick-acting and effortless that any motorised counterpart seems inadequate by comparison.
We were also head over heels in love with the side mirror safety feature, which lights up a small car icon every time a vehicle approaches on either side. When driving an SUV of this size, a little help like that can go a long way. Along similarly safe lines, the Enclave not only detects when you’re veering too close to other objects but automatically seizes the emergency brakes. Again, these are safety measures that can spare you or the vehicle from serious harm.
Ultimately, the 2020 Buick Enclave seduced us one choice feature at a time. We adored the high-resolution rear camera, touch-button ignition, seamless gear selector, advanced safety measures, lever-style seat folders, leather-wrapped steering wheel, ample cargo space, and easy-to-use infotainment system. More than a purely driveable crossover, this adept SUV is very much the sum of its premium parts.
