The tweet, which was published March 21, 2006, is a short five-word sentence that reads “just setting up my twttr”. It is currently listed on a platform called ‘Valuables‘, and the bidding started at a modest $80,000 USD, that is until bidding was taken over by technology entrepreneur Justin Sun, who placed a bid of USD$2 million. The highest bid currently sits at USD$2.5 million, placed by Sina Estavi, CEO of Bridge Oracle.
What is an NFT?
A non-fungible token or NFT is the virtual ownership of the original code to a virtual item. In this case, buying the NFT to the tweet is the equivalent of getting physical ownership of an item (e.g. a certificate of authenticity). Ownership of an NFT isn’t without risks, the tweet will only live as long as Jack Dorsey or Twitter chooses to keep it online.
