In what is likely the biggest news for Samsung at this years unpacked event, the brand has revealed that it’s combining two of its flagship devices into one. The Samsung S22 Ultra and Galaxy Note series will join forces to become one, and yes, the S-Pen is included with a handy storage spot inside the phone for all your creative duties. Expect elevated Nightography, increased video capabilities and battery life that lasts more than a day. Let’s take a closer look.

The most notable change to the S22 Ultra for this year has to be the seamless camera integration. Lenses cleanly present themselves on the rear of the device, with a new glass and haze finish adding to the linear, floating layout. In terms of colours, the Ultra will be available in a choice of four;
- Phantom Black
- Phantom White
Display changes are minimal for this generation of Ultra, with a new 1750nit peak brightness being the main headliner (beating out iPhone 13 Pro Max). Vision booster will help manage this as you move throughout different environments and lighting conditions. The same 6.8-inch sized AMOLED display returns with up to a 120Hz refresh rate.
The display gains an impressive claim of 100% coverage of the DCI-P3 colour gamut, beating the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s 81% and the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s 77% from external testing. It will be interesting to see how this measure up once we get our hands on the device at a later stage.

While nothing jumps off the page immediately, taking a deeper look at the capabilities of the S22 Ultra we find a few minor upgrades that add up to a flagship worthy facelift. Notable additions include a new 4nm processor that claims to be the most advanced AI and ML processing chip, Wi-Fi 6E (you’ll need a 6E capable router), and 45w super-fast charging. Storage sizes carry over from the previous generation as does the IP68 water-resistant rating.
Samsung is committed to giving users the best possible performance for the future, as such, they’ve announced all models in the S22 lineup will be supported for up to four generations of Android operating system upgrades. Reading between the lines, we believe this signals the scaling-back of big hardware upgrades and changes for at least the next four years.

|Operating system||Android 12|
|Charging||45w Wired (Max)
15W Wireless (Max)
|Network and connectivity||5G, LTE, Wi-Fi 6E, Wi-Fi Direct Bluetooth v5.2|
As is the case nowadays, the camera unit has received the most significant upgrade. On the S22 Ultra, we find the same Advanced Nightography features available on the entire S22 family of devices promising crisp, clear videos on both the front and back cameras. Returning for S22 is the 2.4um pixel sensor that’s still the largest Samsung has made, alongside the 100x Space Zoom capability should you need to get a shot of something very very far away.
Super Clear glass on the lens helps users take clear nighttime photos without flare, and a new Portrait Mode feature puts hardware to good use with intelligent AI that can shoot perfect shots every time. Unlike previous generations of Galaxy, the emphasis here seems to be on AI helping users take the best and fastest photos they possibly can. Who wants to stuff around with settings most of the time anyway?!
Ok we give in, plenty of users want to expertly touch up their photos, and Samsung is bringing back the Expert RAW app for in-camera editing tools for DSLR like images – including control over ISO, Shutter Speed, White Balance, and Manual Focus. Professionals can upload 16-bit files for post image production.
