One Chief Creative Officer and 674 days of anticipation and prototype test drives later, Jaguar has officially revealed the 2027 Type 01. Unveiled globally on October 7, 2026, the four-door grand tourer abandons internal combustion entirely, launching with a tri-motor electric setup generating 1,016 HP (757 kW) and 1,365 Nm of torque to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds.

The push into the ultra-luxury electric vehicle segment places the Type 01 in direct competition with the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT and the Rolls-Royce Spectre II. To compete at this tier, Jaguar engineered an 850V charging architecture and a 118kWh battery to deliver a WLTP range of up to 720 kilometres. For a little context, the track-focused Taycan Turbo GT produces 1,034 HP (760 kW) with a 0-100 km/h time of 2.2 seconds. Meanwhile, the updated Rolls-Royce Spectre II features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain producing 593 HP (442 kW) and 1,015 Nm of torque, while the Black Badge variant produces 671 HP (500 kW) and 1,100 Nm. The Type 01 splits the difference, prioritising grand touring comfort alongside hypercar power. For Australian buyers, the Jaguar’s AUD$300,000 starting price significantly undercuts the Spectre II, which starts from AUD$815,000 plus on-road costs.

Engineering highlights include a solid glassless tailgate that relies on a digital ClearSight camera display embedded in a full-width Panoramic Soundbar, alongside a drag coefficient of 0.23 Cd achieved via active front vanes and a three-stage deployable rear spoiler. Inside, a longitudinal brass-finished spine bisects the four-seat cabin, anchored by a 24-inch OLED driver display and a secondary seven-inch touchscreen. Let’s take a closer look at the vehicle and what the people behind it had to say at the launch.

Powertrain, Performance and Architecture

Underpinning the new Type 01 is the dedicated Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA). The structure delivers a torsional rigidity of 51.7 kN/degree, making it the stiffest body-and-battery integration Jaguar has ever produced. The front body incorporates an innovative Tri-Apex Node structure designed to absorb up to 26 tonnes of crash energy, distributing impact forces away from the battery and passenger compartment.

Thomas Müller, Chief Technology Officer at JLR, detailed the engineering approach: “The beautiful design, creative engineering and technological capability of Jaguar Type 01 is an interconnected story. Design-enabling engineering innovations all working in perfect harmony. An unflinching commitment to our design philosophy and jaw-dropping proportions led us to our bespoke architecture, which in turn unlocks the distinctive driving character and performance that enables Type 01 to drive like no other electric car, while still being a true Jaguar.”

The flagship variant utilises a tri-motor layout, pairing a 260kW front motor with twin 310kW rear motors. This configuration produces a combined 1,016 HP (757 kW) and 1,365 Nm of torque, yielding a 0-100 km/h time of 3.2 seconds. Rolling acceleration is equally impressive, pulling from 100 to 180 km/h in 4.0 seconds.

Matt Becker, Vehicle Engineering Director at JLR, explained the tuning philosophy: “At its best, Jaguar has always delivered two characters – performance and refinement. Type 01 marks a step-change in our technical ambitions, with innovative in-house electric propulsion technologies that combine with the car’s unique proportions, low centre of gravity and 50:50 weight distribution. Together, these create a car with refinement, performance and engagement working in perfect harmony, always with power in reserve, to deliver an experience that is truly Jaguar.”

To manage the substantial mass, the chassis features a 50:50 weight distribution, dynamic air suspension with twin-valve active dampers, and an all-wheel steering system that can shift up to six degrees for an 11.5-metre turning circle.

Jon Darlington, Architecture Chief Engineer at Jaguar, noted the handling benefits: “This is a capable luxury grand tourer, agile at low speeds and stable at higher speeds. A car that rotates around your hips, with confidence-inspiring steering and carefully tuned suspension, which provides a wide dynamic bandwidth as you progress through the different driving modes. Type 01’s duality of character is a testament to the hundreds of thousands of hours of development work by our engineering and vehicle dynamic teams on virtual simulators and proving grounds around the world.”

Power is drawn from a 118kWh lithium-ion battery operating on an 850V architecture, monitored by a patented ThermAssist temperature management system that automatically transfers thermal energy between the battery, motors, and cabin. When connected to a 350kW DC fast charger, the system can add 321 kilometres of range in 13 minutes.

Exterior Design and Interior Packaging

The production Type 01 features concept-like exterior proportions defined by a long bonnet, a low roofline, and standard 23-inch aerodynamic wheels. Extensive wind tunnel testing resulted in a drag coefficient of 0.23 Cd, aided by active front cooling vanes and a three-stage deployable rear spoiler that generates up to 75kg of downforce.

The bodyside incorporates the “Impossible Panel,” a complex rear quarter panel that requires a six-stage pressing process and 2,500 tons of pressure to form.

Andrew Wheel, Design Development Director at JLR, outlined the visual intent: “Jaguar Type 01 is the first production car to showcase our new creative philosophy of exuberant modernism. It’s unmistakable from every angle, exquisitely crafted inside and out with dramatic proportions, innovative details and sophisticated surfaces delivering visual impact and aerodynamic performance. With Type 01, we wanted to create something where every journey is an occasion, from how it looks to how it drives and how it makes occupants feel. Type 01 will never arrive unnoticed.”

Up front, the vehicle integrates a suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) utilising 10 external cameras, five radars, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. The forward-facing radar is hidden behind a heated Jaguar device mark to ensure optimal performance in freezing conditions.

Alexey Andreev, Exterior Design Lead at JLR, detailed the signature lighting: “The front of Type 01 is all about presence. Defined by the four-light signature, the new face of Jaguar is instantly recognisable even when approaching from a distance. Thanks to the new JEA architecture, we are able to place visual emphasis on the width of the car with the lamps, which are positioned high and to outermost corners. At the rear, clean uninterrupted surfaces highlight the sculpted shoulders and create a solid, monolithic stance which accentuates the unmistakable horizontal strikethrough, making Type 01’s departure as memorable as its arrival.”

For buyers seeking exclusivity, Jaguar is offering a limited Chromatic Moments collection capped at 60 examples globally, featuring exclusive French Ultramarine and London Red paint finishes. Inside, the cabin layout is defined by a longitudinal central spine that divides the space into four distinct passenger zones.

Andy Hart-Barron, Interior Design Director at JLR, explained the cabin structure: “Our holistic design philosophy translates the vehicle’s exterior presence into a distinctive interior architecture. Type 01 emphasises its dramatic longitudinal nature through the central spine – an architectural statement that creates four individual spaces. The arrangement of clean surfaces, materials and hidden-until-needed technology fuse with the low seating position to provide a cosseting and confidence-inspiring experience on both calm and spirited driving occasions.”

The interior offers three curated themes (Light Story, Dark Story, and Original Story) utilising Woolblend Kvadrat DuoWeave textiles and Ultrafabrics NeoGrain. The environment is maintained by a Cabin Air Purification Pro system designed to remove allergens and toxins.

Mary Crisp, Chief Materiality Designer at Jaguar, elaborated on the textures: “Materials define how you feel, and luxury is not always about more. Colours set the atmosphere, rich textures provide the depth, and the brass-inspired finishers create the character.”

“We have taken a tactile and architectural approach to the Type 01 interior. Luxurious textiles that delight at every touch and a palette inspired by travertine stone combine to create a cossetting and contemporary environment. The subtle play of light and shadow is complemented by moments of bold colour throughout the cabin, which give even the simplest of actions, such as opening a storage area, a sense of drama and theatre.”

The Type 01 removes the rear window entirely, relying instead on a digital ClearSight display embedded in a full-width Panoramic Soundbar. This unit forms part of the 38-speaker Jaguar Immersive Sound System developed by Meridian, which incorporates Sensory Audio seats and a five-channel Active Road Noise Cancellation system.

You can’t miss the 24-inch OLED driver display curves across the dashboard, backed by an NVIDIA-powered central cockpit controller. However, Joan Serra Tur, Vehicle Engineering Manager at JLR, emphasised the user experience: “From the start of the journey, our focus was on making every interaction with Type 01 feel natural and intuitive, from the functions clients use most frequently to how information and controls are presented. The user interfaces and technology throughout Type 01 are designed to support and enhance rather than dominate.”

Price and Availability

Designed, engineered, and crafted in the United Kingdom, the Jaguar Type 01 represents a significant pivot for the brand. While early impressions were awkward and mismanaged, there’s no denying the final outcome is seriously impressive. Half the price of a Rolls-Royce but with nearly double the power, range, and an interior and ride quality experience that puts it up against the best in the world. That’s the Jaguar Type 01.

Rawdon Glover, Managing Director at Jaguar, summarised the launch: “From its dramatic design to its captivating drive, Type 01 distils the essence of Jaguar into a car for a new era. Jaguars should be objects of desire and culturally relevant – that’s their natural habitat and where Jaguar is returning. Type 01 is the foundation of the brand, one that makes no compromise between design and engineering in our quest to reinvent Jaguar for the 21st century.”

For the Australian market, Jaguar has confirmed the Type 01 will carry a starting price of approximately AUD$300,000 before on-road costs. Local order books will officially open in 2027, with specific client delivery timelines to be communicated in due course.
