51-Year-Old Surfer Catches ‘Wave of The Decade’ at Mavericks

We’re only eleven days into the new decade and already a 51-year-old surfer has caught the ‘wave of the decade’ at California’s most notorious big wave. The Santa Cruz local has been charging the Mavericks break for years now, but over the weekend, he came up big. The wave in question has been hailed by the greats of the surfing world as the best wave caught in the waters off Half Moon Bay.

As he paddles into the clean face the wave swells and grows to make it a near-vertical takeoff. After negotiating the initial drop, Mel gets on his toes and seamlessly carves a tight line to shift him under the lip in the pocket of what looks like a 30ft barrel. He parks up with a steezy posture letting the spit throw him out into the channel. As the onlookers and cameraman cheer in awe.

There’s some poetic justice in one of Maverick’s oldest veterans scoring the wave of his lifetime at his home break. The video has quickly made the rounds on social media with the likes of Kelly Slater, Nathan Florence and big wave royalty Kai Lenny throwing all kinds of praise to Peter. “Everyone on earth should see this ride,” Kelly Slater said while Kai Lenny called it the “best wave ever ridden at Mavericks for sure”.
