The Petition to Make Keanu Reeves Times Person of the Year

Ted, Neo, or John Wick—which of Keanu Reeves’ many characters would have you signing the petition to make the actor Times’ Person of the Year? Reeves is definitely the toast of the town right now, thanks to roles in John Wick: Chapter 3—Parabellum, Netflix’s Always Be My Maybe, and his role in the soon-to-be-released Toy Story 4. Then there’s also the sequel Bill & Ted Face the Music coming up. And if that wasn’t enough, gaming fans are clamouring for Reeves’ new roleplaying video game, Cyberpunk 2077. And we haven’t even mentioned his many other iconic roles.

All those roles have made Reeves a favourite among fans, so much so that a petition started on Change.org has called for a number of recognitions, including a statue named after the actor (started by Trey Orcutt), and a demand that Reeves becomes a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (request courtesy of Prajwal Pagar). The biggest petition so far, however, was started by John Doe, who is calling for Reeves to be named Time magazine’s Person of the year. Doe isn’t the only one to feel that way, with 362 supporters signing on so far.

But it’s not just his career that has people clamouring for Reeves to be recognized. The comments abound, as well as stories across the internet, pointing to Reeves’ many acts of kindness and service. Still, even with all the good deeds, the likelihood of Reeves claiming the honour of being Times’ Person of the Year seems unlikely. The award is typically given to a politician, though a few exceptions have been made, such as Taylor Swift and Alyssa Milano in 2017 representing the Me-Too movement. The petition states that “Keanu is the most wholesome person alive, make him the person of the year!”

Reeves has had an excellent year, but he’s also had to deal with his own tragedies, such as the stillborn death of his daughter in 1999 or the accidental death of his girlfriend shortly after. Still, you can’t keep a good man down, and Reeves’ has followed some of the most excellent advice ever given: “Be excellent to each other” and “Party on dudes.”
