Swiss watchmaker Franck Muller is well known for his luxury watches and for creating exclusive timepieces that are highly original and complicated. Muller is taking on another project that ranks right up there with complicated and original—a fully functional Bitcoin watch. A world’s first, the watch, titled Encrypto, includes a laser-etched QR code on the face that acts as a public wallet address where the wearer can deposit bitcoin and check on its balance.
Considered “deep cold storage,” the wallet uses “offline generated, non-deterministic TRNGs (True Random Numbers Generated) that cannot be hacked,” states the announcement. The watch comes with a sealed USB stick that stores the private key.
“We always aim to impact the customer at an emotional level and create a bond between the customer and the timepiece,” stated Franck Muller Regional Director Erol Baliyan. “As a brand, we are a trend maker with a solid track record and are not shy when it comes to adopting innovation.
“Bitcoin is the millennial gold and is the perfect marriage between innovation and personal choice.”
Only 500 examples of the watch, in both men’s and women’s versions, will be sold. The watches will range in price from USD$10,000 to USD$60,000. The face of the watch includes the Bitcoin logo with a circuitry background. The caseback has a similar etching.
The watch comes with the option of customising both the band and the dial, and some models will include precious models and diamonds.
